Under "21.5 (beta18) \"chestnut\" (+CVS-20041130) XEmacs Lucid", with a recent Sumo tarball, I click Options -> Internet -> Compose Mail With -> MH , and then type C-x m . I get, again, Unable to find the `mhparam’ command For Mew, with the same copy of 21.5, I look at the docs, under “Let’s get started” and see: [...] 3. `M-x mew-send' :: Enter Draft mode for message composing. I type that, and I get a gorgeous picture of two kittens, some introductory text, and “Mew errors: Must set `mew-mail-domain-list'” just below the kittens. Nothing I type in this buffer brings me any further. Neither of these is Apple-computer levels of “just working” and while I could solve either issue with some more reading, I believe we would be seeing reports if people were using the packages. -- “Ah come on now Ted, a Volkswagen with a mind of its own, driving all over the place and going mad, if that’s not scary I don’t know what is.”

Xpm, VC++, etc. 19 years, 10 months

It took me quite a lot of effort to get XEmacs to compile under VC++ 7; I'm surprised I haven't heard more complaints about this. Anyway, one of the nastiest parts was recompiling Xpm. Xpm-3.4k has been frozen for years. I suggest we just incorporate it into XEmacs as a subdirectory, so that we can depend on it always being there. Comments? ben

Hi! I’d like CVS write access. There are a few small patches I have in the queue that aren’t being committed, and they’re small enough that it seems not to be a quality of the code issue, more that people aren’t getting to them. I’d like to commit Jamie Zawinski’s X selection fixes from the middle of last year, and am prepared to back them out if they give people problems. (I’m pretty sure they won’t; I haven’t seen any in six months running them.) I can update the mhonarc configuration to work properly with the various MIME character sets, in contrast to what it does at the moment. I can co-ordinate with the authors of the package and import a more recent version of crypt.el than is currently there, adding, for example, gpg support to it out of the box. There are also a few simple, relatively subjective changes I’d like to make; - Move to vm-user-agent as our default email user agent, when available, because it handles MIME properly, and there’s no excuse for our shipping a default mail command that doesn’t. - Move the default gc-cons-threshold from its current 500k to something bigger. (We inherited 400k from the FSF; it’s been at 500k since at least 1996. I’ve been running with ten MB for a year or so now, to good effect, and would suggest four as a good default for XEmacs. For one example of what it does, it can make bigger VM folders much more usable.) - Set the default X11 application class to “XEmacs”. Yes, this will break old X11 resource files, but it’s nothing a search and replace can’t fix, and it _is_ a branding issue :-) - Set the default frame name to “XEmacs”. Same applies. - Add a default binding for manual-entry under Unix. (For a few years there, it was the one entry in my init.el I could least forego, and I would most have liked to be able to take out.) - Make cperl-perldoc an autoloaded function, and give it a default binding under cperl mode. I won’t commit anything huge and Mule-ish without discussion beforehand, as would be expected. If this suits people, I have an SSH public key available at http://www.parhasard.net/aidan.id_dsa.pub , and I’d prefer to use “aidan” my CVS user name. Comments? I would have noticed. That problem was posted quite a while ago. A couple of days later it just simply magically cured itself for reasons unknown to me. That sort of thing is typical of the stuff that happens when you rebuild a system from scratch. It takes a while for all the pieces to stop rolling. Sometimes moving to a new release is mostly a matter of trading one set of bugs for another. Meanwhile I discovered that I can no longer rebuild xemacs from source. That problem remains, but doesn't matter because the version I have works fine. It's not an xemacs problem -- I'm evidently missing a bunch of build stuff. I don't know why and I don't know what.
