Thanks. Just to let you know, for some reason I cannot install either through packages menu of xemacs or by the net installer general-docs-1.01-pkg.tar.gz. The net installer simply says it cannot be d/l'd. As you can guess I'm talking about xemacs for windows.

It means that we haven't set the AUTHOR_VERSION in the Makefile, ie. we

This is however a problem in completion mode. I imagine the same thing
can occur for legitimate templates. My guess is that the completion
package doesn't cope with non-paren chars (i.e. "<" and ">") behaving
as parens through syntax-table properties.
I've therefore cc'd this to xemacs-beta(a)xemacs.org.

This is due to a bug in the XEmacs core, so I'm resending it to
xemacs-beta(a)xemacs.org.
More specifically, forward-comment doesn't work properly in the
backward direction. To reproduce without CC Mode functions: Go to the
beginning of any of the "int" tokens. Evaluate (forward-comment -17).
It stops inside the preceding comment, between the first and second
"/".
Perhaps this is fixed now; I've reported comment skipping bugs like
this earlier, at least. (Haven't got the cvs version running, so I
haven't checked.)

Could someone else try compiling and installing the latest 21.5.b16 cvs of
XEmacs with the following environment variable set
VERSION_CONTROL=numbered
to see whether the install fails?
It appears as though the code run by make install (but not by make all)
causes XEmacs to create versions of the files

in the src directory. When during the fourth iteration of the install
process, XEmacs sees ~4~, it stops to ask (in batch mode) whether to delete
old backups. Any answer leads to an assertion failure.
I modified the install routine in my auto compile/install script to unset
the environment variable, after first deleting all the backups from the most
recent install. That fixed the problem. But I think that it should not be
happening at all, or should be documented.
Here is the routine from my script, that prevents the error:

Why would it hang? I thought the lose_lose+break code was there to
work around bugs in the code by giving the appearance of correct
behavior when the code bugs out.
At least that was my impression when I last read that code, I could
really be totally wrong about this.

No, I typically have at most 5 frames (total across two displays) of
at most two windows each, and I've got 50-100 buffers if that matters.

Well, I just commented out that abort() yesterday, so it's too early
to tell. But, as long as the "break" is there, it should not hang.
Maybe I should put a printf() in so I know I've hit it at least..
what other data would be useful?

Hi, I noticed in the recent package mail that you mentioned that new
Sumos were going to be made. In case you're not intending to, it owuld
be a good thing, I think, to send a separate mail with `Sumo' in the
title when they are there - this makes it a bit easier for people like
me who tend to just fetch and install new sumos when they appear to
spot them.
