Dear Bug Team!
After just nstalling the latest XEmacs-native for Windows (I am running
Windows 2000) using the net-installer, when trying to open a Java file,
Xemacs comes up with the following error (see Recent Messages below):
File mode specification error: (file-error "Searching for program" "No such
Dieter> file or directory" "find")
Any suggestions? Could it maybe have to do with the fact that I have
cygwin on the machine as well? I have tried to rename the cygwin/bin
directory to avoid clashed but it did not help.

Dear Bug Team!
I found a very annoying bug with indenting C files.
The bug occurs under the following circumstances
- tested with fresh created user without any (x)emacs specific config
files
- load a *.c file
- M-x font-lock-mode
- mark an area and press C-x n n to activate the narrow mode
- delete any whitespace character in front of a line, so that the
indenting is incorrect
- try to re-indent the line with TAB
- this results in an error like
"Wrong type argument: number-char-or-marker-p, (48809 . 48816)"
(look at the bottom of the automatically generated info)
- I could not reproduce this without the font-lock-mode
- the backtrace of "Debug on Error" is:

Dear Bug Team!
XEmacs regularly hangs when doing networking. I use Gnus and read news
from several news servers (and IMAP accounts). What often happens is
that XEmacs just hangs and stops responding if anything goes wrong with
a network connection. There seems to be no timeout, e.g. once it's hung,
it will stay that way (I've waited several hours). Nothing is redrawn,
there is just a blank XEmacs window.
The common recurring theme is the two messages that appear on the
console that XEmacs was started from:
X Error of failed request: BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)
Major opcode of failed request: 25 (X_SendEvent)
Resource id in failed request: 0xe009ba
Serial number of failed request: 593927
Current serial number in output stream: 594059
Xlib: unexpected async reply (sequence 0x9108b)!

The X requests are always the same, only the parameters change.
After being killed XEmacs sometimes produces a Lisp backtrace, which
usualy points (unsurprisingly) to network code, as in:

Hey folks,
Not sure if these are bugs -- I'm running xemacs 21.4.6, the debian
"testing packages" on a debian "unstable" system.
I've just recently migrated to xemacs from FSF emacs, mostly happy
with the experience. I'm having a little trouble with colors in the
xterm, which I can't seem to activate properly. In FSF emacs, I used
mail-mode to compose messages, and it gave me lovely colored
highlighting of quoted text, etc. I can't seem to get this to come
back, though I have finally been able to get some colors to wok,
notably blue for the mode line and red/gold for highlighting marked
regions. But the highlighting of, e.g., headers and quoted text in
mail (or, now, the modified "post" -- I've tried both) mode, or even
of comments in programming modes, eludes me.
I'd heard that people have trouble with the default colors in the
terminal, so I tried customizing them. No effect.
All these features atually work pretty well when xemacs is called
without the -nw switch; the trouble arises only in the terminal.
Any ideas where I should look? I've posted my .xemacs directory
online, at
http://www.derailleur.org/xemacs
if anyone wants to take a look. Didn't want to send all them files to
the whole list, though.
Another problem, which I've been able to confirm with other users, has
to do with movement-related hooks to modes. For instance, this "post"
mode, which was developed for use with mutt, includes a hook moving
the cursor to the start of the mail text when the mode is loaded.
THis doesn't seem to work most of the time; I have the impression that
maybe the command is issued before text is actually read into the
buffer. Is there a way to make sure text is in the buffer before
actually issuing a command? I think that would solve this problem.

Package building problems (xslide & vm)

I'm doing a small sync with Emacs 21.3 to pick up some new features of
define-minor-mode that they have. I think that part is done. I am now
trying to build the packages to I can check whether my sync messed
anything up. I am compiling with a MULE-enabled XEmacs. I am
encountering two problems.
(1) When compiling the packages with XEmacs 21.4.14 on a Linux box with
1GB RAM and after doing "unlimit stacksize", the make is bombing out
like this:

Trying that part of the compile by hand, I found that the overflow
is occurring while loading xslide-font, on line 191, while doing
this:
(regexp-opt-depth xsl-fo-attribute-symbol-alist-regexp)
where xsl-fo-attribute-symbol-alist-regexp was just produced by
regexp-opt. This does not happen when building with XEmacs
21.5.16.
(2) The build crashes in hyperbole, because hvm.el calls
vm-set-modflag-of, which vm/vm-autoload.el claims is defined in
vm-message.el. It isn't. From:

I gather that the call in the hyperbole code should be changed to
vm-set-stuff-flag-of, and that vm-autoload.el should be fixed.

I had xemacs crash when opening a new file. I did: C-x C-f, specified
the new file name (smyth-seats.awk) and it died completely. I'm
running windowmaker with gnome (gnome2-2.4.0, installed from the
FreeBSD ports system). The xemacs window just disappeared.
I have xemacs start up on login; the following is from

Hope this helps. I've used xemacs for the last few years (and emacs
before that) and have seldom (never?) had it crash like this.
I have noticed that there are odd interactions between my current
installation of mozilla (Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; FreeBSD i386; en-US;
rv:1.5) Gecko/20031107) and my current installation of xemacs.
Perhaps once a week, xemacs will stop responding and will print
messages to .xsession-errors indicating a X event(?) problem.

A few days ago I noticed that the buffer tabs are not visible anymore
in 21.4.14. I also noticed that the "set", "save" and "done" buttons
are missing from customize. Everything is well in 21.5 so there seems
to have been some recent change to 21.4 that has caused this.

I run from time to time into trouble opening some files. I can not
figure out why it works for a while and then stops to work (means I
can edit a file and safe and the other day I cannot open it again).
I put on debug-on-error and got the following output:
