In the file SRC/lisp/startup.el lines 549-557 the following code sets
version-control based on the VERSION_CONTROL environment setting:

The problem with this comes when running 'make install' and the system goes
through a late iteration of dumping a working XEmacs. The program is in
batch mode and does not expect to answer user input. But version-control
expects to find out whether to delete excess copies of the generated
autoload files. This triggers an assertion.
Shouldn't there also be a test for whether we are in batch mode? Or perhaps
batchmode should deal with user input prompting. Does any request that
leads to a prompt with a needed answer cause batch mode to fail with an
assertion?

I have not looked at the patch, but vetoing it on the principle that
the Great Font Unification will be impeded by this work is not
conducive to progress, in my opinion.

having had my last problem solved for me instnataneously (thanks!), I
can't resist trying this one out:
I work mostly within the xterm (xemacs -nw...), and I've customized all
my fontlock colors to work in the terminal. Everything's fine, but I
still do wish I could get more than the 16 standard xterm colors when
in xterm. The manual seems to suggest that I can do this somehow, but
I haven't had any luck. Is there an easy way?

I got a crash when I quit the xemacs by press C-x-c.

how do I turn off file locking?

It used to be that (setq lock-directory nil) would tell xemacs to never,
ever prompt me with "user blah is locking file foo, really edit?"
Apparently things have been "improved" such that this is no longer
the case.
I tried (defun file-locked-p (file) nil) but that doesn't fix it either.
debug-on-quit / debug-on-error tricks only get me as far as

It is when there's stuff in there that is supposed to run on both
XEmacs _and_ GNU/Emacs (goto-addr.el). To my mind, goto-addr.el
shouldn't be in fsf-compat.

[Bug: 21.4.14] resizing window hanging

Dear Bug Team!
I just updated from redhat 9.0 to fedora core1, and want to use
xemacs 21.4.14. However, when I want to maximize my xemacs window the system
hangs and I have to use xkill to get rid of it.
There is not much information in here but I've found at least one
other person with this problem on google so I guess it is reasonnably
common.
