ediff adding stray separators to Tools menu 23 years, 4 months

Hello Michael, All! I have experienced following cosmetic problem in XEmacs 21.1.14 and now in XEmacs 21.5-b1: After evalling (require 'ediff-hook) (require 'ediff) in a vanilla XEmacs, the Tools menu has three extra separators at its end. Inspection of ediff-hook.el of ediff 1.30 1.30 Interface over GNU patch. suggests the problem is here: ;; Note we wrap this in a progn so that we pick up the whole def ;; for auto-autoload. question on buffer-file-coding-system 23 years, 4 months

I just found that hexl is broken if you build XEmacs without FILE_CODING turned on - it attempts to take the value of the variable buffer-file-coding-system which is not defined if FILE_CODING is not enabled. I submitted a silly patch for this that uses (boundp buffer-file-coding-system) to determine whether this variable is defined. This seems like a kludge. I'm wondering if it might be better to ensure that buffer-file-coding-system is defined even if FILE_CODING is not present. This means that package lisp wouldn't have to be checking whether buffer-file-coding-system is bound. On the other hand, this wouldn't help for people with older XEmacs versions who update their packages. What is the right way to handle this? Check for boundp in Lisp code, or make sure the variable is defined even if FILE_CODING is not enabled? Or some other approach?

what encoding is the X clipboard text in? 23 years, 4 months

There is a slight misfeature in Mule XEmacs when working under X. When I type some Cyrillic text in XEmacs, then select it with mouse and paste it to xterm, I get various clearly wrong results. I understand the issues about e.g. mixed English-Russian-Chinese, which cannot be handled by eight-bit xterms). I think at least the simplest/user-defined case should be somehow worked out. Sometimes when I'm pasting text I get it in iso8859-5, internal Mule encoding. I want it to be in koi8-r (or other Cyrillic encoding of my choice). For that I need something like (set-clipboard-ccl-programs 'ccl-encode-koi8-r-font 'ccl-decode-koi8-r-font) (so that pastes from e.g. xterm to XEmacs would work too). When I try to paste from xterm (which AFAIU copies text to clipboard as a single-byte bytes in koi8-r) to XEmacs, I get the following there: %/1─┬koi8-rPRIWET The "PRIWET" part corresponds to the appropriate koi8-r characters with stripped eighth bit and flipped case (whoa!). I have a slight feeling that I've seen a function for that, but I can't find it anywhere. Sometimes also I get the Cyrillic string pasted to XTerm as a series of tilde characters, just like it happens when Mule can't find fonts for used encoding. I can't yet figure out how to exactly reproduce that. I'd be glad to test any patches for that matter. --alexm

The problem with DNS lookups on XEmacs startup are caused by getaddrinfo() function with hints.ai_flags = AI_CANONNAME. These kinds of calls are in src/process-unix.c and src/sysdep.c. I think those functions are somewhat buggy in glibc 2.1.x. The nature of the bug is as follows. The FQDN of my machine is "tyranny.hsys.msk.ru". When XEmacs calls getaddrinfo(), that function tries to resolve sequentially "tyranny.hsys.msk.ru." "tyranny.msk.ru." "tyranny.ru." "tyranny." Same thing goes on with "localhost".
