Why would you _not_ want these to behave in exactly the same way from lisp, other than creation time and GC time? If they behave like a normal list, experimenting with which is better for a specific application is incredibly simple. There are no separate interfaces for weak hash tables (which _are_ used in 3rd party lisp code). Switching the glyph or face caching in Emacs/W3 to use weak lists would be very simple the way it stands now, otherwise I'd have to change many more places in the code. -Bill P.

I've just uploaded the following packages to the Pre-Releases directory: ediff-1.29-pkg.tar.gz viper-1.24-pkg.tar.gz psgml-1.22-pkg.tar.gz Get them by: =========== 21.1 Options -> Manage Packages -> Add Download Site -> Pre-Releases Options -> Manage Packages -> Update Installed Packages 21.2 Tools -> Packages -> Add Download Site -> Pre-Releases Tools -> Packages -> Update Installed Packages And if you have any/all of those packages installed they will be updated. If you don't have them already installed and you wish to try them, simply: M-x package-get-all RET <pkgname> RET (eg ediff) "Version: x.xx" will display in minibuffer, hit RET to download. Or, do it all at once with: M-x pui-list-packages RET With these two methods you still need to do the first step above (Add Download Site). As many of you know, Richard Reingruber (primarily) and I are working on making the GC in XEmacs replaceable. Right now, Richard is working on simplifying XEmacs's data representation to make this easier. One particular issue requires a policy decision to handle right: weak lists. Currently, weak lists are implemented as a special object around an ordinary list which can be extracted via the `weak-list-list' procedure. This exposes the internal representation of weak lists to a degree so as to make proper generic handling in the GC difficult, so we'd like to discuss changing it. The simplest way to implement weak lists would be to just make them a regular cons of a weak pointer (a more primitive object) and a weak list, and have special accessors `weak-list-car' and `weak-list-cdr'. `weak-list-car' looks for a live list cons, and performs some cleanup work on the way. Possibly another thin layer above this for looping would get us even further. Doing would get rid of quite a bit of implementation complexity in XEmacs. As to the present code base which uses weak lists: - *No* Lisp code presently. - Simple weak lists for extend children and frame subwindows which would be very easy to convert. - Specifier alists for windows, a really awkward case which would involve somewhat more special-casing as is the case presently. Are there any objections to this change in principle? The configure script failed to find the gtk-config script. Possibly another thin layer above this for looping > would get us even further. if "weak list" means what I think it means (i.e. a list built with objects that behave like regular conses but don't hold on to their cars), then a nice alternative would be to use the Chez Scheme solution: absolutely regular conses, but allocated in a separate space, so that the GC knows they are special. well, you are most probably aware of that, but just in case. -- SIGTHTBABW: a signal sent from Unix to its programmers at random intervals to make them remember that There Has To Be A Better Way. -- Erik Naggum
