Using the version of "font-lock.el" in the latest 21.2 build (revision
1.7.2.28), loading any file which requires font-lock seems to peg the CPU.
Reverting to revision 1.7.2.27 fixes things....

I've noted that Matt Tucker's syntax table improvements are now in
CVS, and suggested testing them.

Ok... so I've been working on implementing the widget support for the 21.2
branch of the GTK code. And it striked me that shoe-horning this into the
glyph code is pretty horrible.
Why not have a very thin lisp wrapper around the various widget functions
we need and then just have a simple glyph specification like:

Does anybody really think it is easier or more intuitive to write this:

Maybe I've just been spoiled by writing so much stuff using the GTK
bindings, but the glyph stuff seems incredibly painful for the limited
`api' we are exposing for the widgets.
No offense meant Andy, you've done a great job getting the code as far as
it is. I just don't see how a medium-to-large GUI project could use the
current stuff without going bonkers in the process.
I'm going go listen to the new dropkick murphys cd and try not to think
about XEmacs for a night now that jen is back home. :)

Segv running tty gnuclient under an x gnuserv

In XEmacs 21.2 (beta43) "Terspichore" [Lucid] (i686-pc-linux) of Wed Jan 31 2001 on migraine
configured using `configure --prefix=/home/xris/Tools --debug=no --error-checking=none'
Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug
and the precise symptoms of the bug:
I've found that if I use this two-line init.el file:
(gnuserv-start)
(display-time)
then start up xemacs on an x display;
then attach to the xemacs on a tty display by typing "gnuclient -nw"
and execute this dribble file inside the tty display:

xemacs will segv. (I've included the stack trace at the end of this report.)
Binary searching on the betas revealed that the bug first occurred in
beta33. I've also discovered that the bug does not appear if I try to attach
to an x-display gnuserv with another x-display gnuclient (i.e., get rid of
the "-nw") or if I start up a tty server and connect either via x or another
tty. In other words, the only dangerous combination is first x, then tty.
Also, the terminal type of the tty doesn't seem to matter.
Finally, I discovered that I could also avoid the segv by adding the
following line before the call to display-time:
(setq display-time-form-list '(date time-text load-text mail-text))
The time, load, and mail must all start as text. If any one of them remains
a glyph, xemacs will still segv.

Overtall font in modeline slops over into frame

Anybody know if this is a font bug or an XEmacs bug? It occasionally
obscures text. :-( Note how the Canna modeline indicator at the left
end of the line extends into the window above. (Thank you Debian for
screwing up my fontpath again....)
