for cygwin handling of URL's doesn't seem to do the right thing here:
For example if calling mswindows-shell-execute with
http://xemacs.org/Documentation/index.html
I get the following in my running Netscape

which results in a error message about Illegal Characters in Request.
My `browse-url-browser-function' is set to

I have updated the kits again to include mike's handle fix and to fix some
minor packaging issues. The release process was fully automated this time,
so hopefully I can do subsequent releases very quickly. I have committed
all changes under the windows-21-4 branch.
I really need a confirmed install on Win98 before making the announcement,
unfortunately the ftp site seems to be hugely slow now so I suspect a few
people are downloading. If anyone who uses XEmacs on Win98 could try I
would be really grateful.

Try the following:
xemacs -q:
M-x load-library
dictionary
M-x dictionary-search

and then try and click with button 2 on
Common Object Request Broker Architecture
You'll get:
Buffer is read-only: #<buffer "*Dictionary buffer*">
This is because:
button2 runs `mouse-track'
instead of
button2 runs `link-mouse-click'
as suggested by the source code in /usr/local/lib/xemacs/xemacs-packages/lisp/dictionary/link.el.

* replaced set-text-properties by remove-text-properties and
add-text-properties because this function is not recommended

It seems that this change is responsible for the error. Strange enough
in the version 1.2.1, which I used, before dictionary evolved into an
Xemacs package, the code was correct and used to work.
Attached a patch (which at least works for me). Can anybody confirm this behaviour ?

I've just spent quite a while trying to find out why mail indication
(in display-time) wasn't working. It turned out to be because when I
typed "~/mail/inbox" into the customization box for
display-time-mail-file, this was set as a quoted literal, not a
string. It's not obvious that you have to put quotes around the value
you use; shouldn't there be an explicit customize type that lets you
choose between nil and a string?

Yesterday I did a complete download and install in Win98SE. Actually,
because of the slowness, I got the packages off a mirror first, and only
downloaded the binary package itself off of ftp.xemacs.org. The mirrors did
not have it yet, at that time, although it got mirrored later.
Download: OK - no problems
Install: OK - no problems
Use: OK - no problems detected sofar
So, from my observations, the release seems to be GO on Win98SE. I did no
extensive testing because of the issue described below.
In a multi-user Win98 environment, there is a really annoying thing, namely
trying to set $HOME correctly. I still have not figured out a way to reset
$HOME when users log in and out in Win98. (FYI; in Win98 this is mostly used
to allow personalized desktops etc.) I tried (setenv "HOME"
[path-to-home-dir-based-on-user-login-name]) in site-start.el, but apparently
the HOME variable is read really early on during startup, and the user home
directory was already set to "C:\\". I found no way to reset it from within
site-start.el - any hints are appreciated!
It might make sense to consider a tweak that would allow the HOME (or "~")
variable to be set within site-start.el, using the user-login-name as a
variable. I know, this would be ugly, strange, and even outright dangerous.
But isn't that what site-start.el is all about. :)

Dear Bug Team!
I recently installed the cygwin version of Xemacs on my Windows ME
system. Xemacs seems to work fine, but is unable to start a shell.
When I select Tools->Shell->Shell, I get the error message:
Opening pty or pipe: Bad file number
This happens if I try to run anything that requires a separate
process. For example, it will also give that error message if I try
to run the perl debugger using perldb.
What I think should happen? I think that Xemacs should create a new
shell process and display the prompt in an emacs buffer. Or, if I do
perldb, it should start up the perl process, display the debugger
prompt in an emacs buffer, and sync with my perl source in a separate
buffer.
When I run with debug mode, I get the following backtrace

First of all thanks to Mike for clarifying! And then I completely agree
with Daniel that this should at least be documented in the PROBLEMS file
if there's no way to make configure detect this "new" ld behaviour and
automatically add the aforementioned options to revert to previous
default. (The latter would be more elegant, of course. ;-) )

Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug
and the precise symptoms of the bug:
Display can be corrupted when scrolling mixed character sets
with large print.
To reproduce, first execute this Lisp (I don't think the bug
is specific to these fonts, but these are the ones I used):

Then put lots of text in an empty buffer (must be more text
than will fit on the screen, so can do scrolling.)
Then add some Simplified Chinese characters on the first
line (the bug is not limited to Simplified Chinese or to the
first line, but this is what I did). For example, invoke
the Hello program (M-? h), copy the line saying "Chinese",
and yank it into the buffer.
Then execute the following Lisp (in that buffer) to make the
Chinese characters large print:

Then split the frame (Ctrl-x 2). Then move the mouse
pointer to the top left corner of the BOTTOM window (lower
half of the frame), click, and drag the pointer down to the
very bottom of the desktop (below the emacs frame, so that
the buffer starts scrolling down a line at a time).
You should see that the modeline between the two frames gets
partly overwritten with the Chinese characters. (Ctrl-L
restores it.)
(The display also gets corrupted if you do the top window
instead of the bottom one, but the effect isn't quite so
obvious.)

The VM mail reader won't work when running xemacs on a TTY
(i.e. not in X windows). The modeline says:
Wrong type argument: char-or-string-p, nil
Similar errors occur when you try to use VM from a gnuclient
that's on a TTY and is connected to an xemacs that's already
running VM under X.
