This has potential to be a FAQ, so I'm responding on xemacs-beta (and
will add something to the release page, too).

The short, not very responsive, answer is, "Yes, if you build and
install it." That is, as far as I know, GTK can be built and used on
any *nix flavor that supports X11R6. I don't know how well it works
and is supported on Solaris, HPUX, AIX, etc, though.
The real answer is that when I wrote

Ie, there will be a --with-gtk configuration option that works the
same way as --with-dialogs=motif or --with-widgets=athena.
The present plan is to default to --with-gtk=no for the release on
_all_ platforms, including Linux. This probably implies the same
default for the prereleases.
People who have no need or desire for GTK at this time can ignore it,
except that some of the changes made for GTK may impact other
platforms either because it makes sense to unify the code, or
inadvertantly (eg, a misplaced #ifdef HAVE_GTK). Wringing out such
bugs is one of the purposes of the test period.

Configure 21.1.14 does not find XPM on Cygwin without X11 install ed

I did a fresh update of Cygwin and then downloaded the
21.1.14 tarball. Configure was run without any options.
It failed to find XPM because the first of the two test
programs would not compile because X11 header files
could not be found. Configure for 21.2.43 does
correctly detect XPM.
I don't understand configure well enough to create a
patch, but the only difference in the XPM section
of the two configure scripts is that the 21.2.43
version has the line "#define XPM_NUMBERS" at line 7543
of the file. This would be at line 6958 of the 21.1.14
version.

shifted arrow keys and the region

I was just playing around and I discovered that if I hold the shift
key down and hit the arrow keys, the mark is set and the region is
activated. In fact, it acts just like I hit 'C-spc' and then the
unshifted arrow keys. This seems like a fine thing to me. The
complete lack of documentation is what puzzles me: if I run
'describe-key' on 'Sh-up', I get the description for 'up'. (Actually,
if I hit 'C-h k', I get the prompt "Describe key: ". If I hit
'Sh-up', then I see "Sh-up" appear briefly in the minibuffer, and
*then* I get the description for the 'up' key.) The description for
'up' doesn't say anything about the behavior when the shift key is
held down.
Similarly, if I hit 'C-h b', there are no listings for the shifted
arrow keys.
So: should the function describe-key give a description for 'Sh-up'
(etc.)? Should the documentation for each arrow key say what happens
if you hold down the shift key? Should describe-bindings have
listings for the shifted arrow keys? (A cursory inspection of the
info pages doesn't help much, either; for instance, these shifted
arrow keystrokes are not given in the "Setting the Mark" node.)

21.1.14 vs. alphaev5-dec-osf5.0

I've been running various versions of XEmacs 21.2 lately, but I
thought I would try getting the new release 21.1.14, just for kicks.
When I tried to configure it, I got this message:
./configure: XEmacs hasn't been ported to `alphaev5-dec-osf5.0' systems.
./configure: Check `etc/MACHINES' for recognized configuration names.
'./configure ... alpha-dec-osf1' worked, sort of (the tests in 'make
check' report 100% success, but then it hangs; otherwise, xemacs seems
to run okay). Is it worthwhile fixing configure to recognize
alphaev5-dec-osf5.0?
(On a related topic, should /etc/MACHINES be updated in version
21.2.43, to reflect the fact that alphaev5-dec-osf5.0 is recognized by
configure?)

Well, dump time uses the exact same rules as run time. I consider
that an extremely desirable property.

You're right, but the code in question was written at a time where we

22.0 Release Status: Important news

Ben's back from Brazil.
He proceeded to catch the flu as soon as he got back (for this he
lives in Arizona!?), and hasn't accomplished much since. However, his
neuro-muscular issues seem to continue under control, and perhaps to
improve. He expects to be able to work with pretty good efficiency.
His plan at present is to have a version of his Mule on Windows work
that builds and maybe runs on a branch in CVS by February 1. Code
complete on March 1. This will miss the release target by a mile. So
I'm going to hope for miracles, but am expecting to have to scratch
the Mule/NT stuff from the release. Ben agrees with this assessment,
and also opposes delaying the release.
I propose we start looking for a Release Manager for 22.2, with
tentative target date September 1, immediately. This was always my
plan, but Ben insists that he will complete this project by mid 2d
quarter. That means that we'll have
o a well-tested major feature, plus (I hope)
o various smaller projects, and
o work building on the widgets, GTK, and custom themes
for release late 3rd quarter. (Aside to Jan V: I haven't yet updated
the release status page concerning themes.)
Vin, Martin:
When should we open the 21.5 development branch? (My proposal is to
rename it to 22.1 when we're sure that the current release will be
22.0.) I have that tentatively scheduled for next week. Is that too
soon?
Do we know how to move the head of trunk to that branch? When should
we do that?
Note: this is separate from the Ben and Bill branchs for Mule/NT and
GTK respectively.

Another progress gauge (maybe general widget?) issue

I've switched my daily-use XEmacs over to 21.2, and observed that the
progress bar seems to update the whole widget, including text, every
time the bar is extended. (XEmacs is running on a relatively slow,
loaded machine, across a 10Mbps LAN, and the local X server is XF86
4.0, which seems to have some slow painting issues on my workstation.)
This is not what I would call widget-like behavior, because there
should be no exposes being generated: the widget is the top window in
the stack.
Is this a problem with Falk's progress bar widget, or with XEmacs?
The buffer tabs widget may have similar behavior in the sense that the
whole thing often gets redrawn just because I change messages in VM
(but this may be associated with VM's use of a presentation buffer
separate from the folder buffer---it may very well be that the buffer
list gets "dirtied" from the point of view of the buffers tabs).
OTOH, the tabs widget often seems to be already on screen while the
rest of the frame gets redrawn.
