In 21.2.36 it works ok.
In 21.2.37 xemacs displays message "Loading finder...done" and hangs.

I ran into the following problem building 21.2.37 (see the bild output
below). When the build failed, I tried running the xemacs executable int
the src directory.When run from the bash command line I see:
$ xemacs
bash: xemacs: Device or resource busy
$
When running xemacs from the NT command line I see:
D:\Appl\xemacs-21.2.37\src>xemacs
The D:\Appl\xemacs-21.2.37\src\xemacs.exe application cannot be run in
Windows
NT mode.

As a point of style, shouldn't this be either Bufbyte or Emchar?
`unsigned char' doesn't have a real meaning for most of XEmacs.

They certainly don't disappear. (From a release standpoint, all
patches to XEmacs 21.2 have also disappeared down a black hole.

I'm going to try to fix func-menu by fixing the byte-compiler.
I just wanted to give some background about how the old way was also
broken, and what I was trying to fix with my original patch.
Here is the promise made by the lispref:

In order for compilation of macro calls to work, the macros must be
defined in Lisp when the calls to them are compiled. The compiler has a
special feature to help you do this: if a file being compiled contains a
＠code{defmacro} form, the macro is defined temporarily for the rest of
the compilation of that file. To use this feature, you must define the
macro in the same file where it is used and before its first use.

On my system
XEmacs 21.2 (beta35) "Nike" [Lucid] (i386-unknown-freebsd3.3) of Tue
Aug 22 2000 on lamia.LF.net
(describe-installation) shows me

Compiling in support for GNU DBM.
but I see

=> Unsupported database type: berkeley_db
So, what das 'Compiling in support for Berkeley database.' really
mean. Am I missing something?

Recently i compiled 21.2.36 with motif widgets and got stable repeatable crash
when using finder.
To reproduce: xemacs -vanilla
C-h p (finder-by-keyword) -- *Finder* buffer pops up
in this buffer click with left mouse button on line that starts with 'build'
then click there with the third mouse button. Some times it works but mostly
it crashes.
It is still there in the latest CVS.
I use LessTif 0.91 and XFree86-4.0.1 on Linux 2.2.16 glibc 2.1.1
