[Success (sort of)] 21.2 "Clio" XEmacs Lucid (beta12) on sparc-sun-solaris2.5.1 26 years, 1 month

I had to downgrade the mule-base package from 1.28 to 1.27, because otherwise I'd get lots of error messages about missing libraries. Apparently these files where moved to the xemacs core, but if I check out 21.2.12 with cvs I don't get these files... I'm sorry but I can't provide you with the binaries. However, here is how you can compile them yourself. 1) Download and install CYGWIN (http://sourceware.cygnus.com/cygwin/) 2) Download and install the Xlib's (pointers from the cygwin home page) 3) You've already got the sources for 21.0.64 downloaded, right? 4) Fire up cygwin. 5) % cd ......../xemacs-21.0.64 % ./configure ; make ; make install Done. LP64 XEmacs woiks! 26 years, 1 month

I've just compiled XEmacs for the sparc v9 architecture with the CC 5 beta, and it appears to work. On that build, most-positive-fixnum is 4611686018427387903. Yay! On a less happy note, preliminary benchmarks show it to be quite a bit slower than ILP32 XEmacs. Specifically, `xemacs -batch -eval "(let ((i (* 1024 1024 10))) (while (> i 0) (setq i (1- i))))"' takes 39.49 seconds of CPU time on a v8 build, while it takes 60.02 seconds on a v9 build. Apparently, the price of 64-bit registers is high. :-( (For the Sun-uninitiated, ILP32 and LP64 refer to the bit size of integer, long, and pointer types in "C". ILP32, or v8, behaves like traditional 32-bit Unices. LP64 behaves like Digital Unix.)

BUG REPORT: New VM 6.67 broken (seems like packaging problem) 26 years, 1 month

I downloaded and installed the latest tarball, did a M-x vm, and got (from C-h l): Invalid function: (macro . #<compiled-function (&rest forms) "...(16)" [let ((vm-sbe-buffer (current-buffer))) unwind-protect progn forms (and (not (eq vm-sbe-buffer (current-buffer))) (buffer-name vm-sbe-buffer) (set-buffer vm-sbe-buffer))] 5>) Loading vm-macro...done Loading vm-macro... Loading vm-window...done Loading vm-window... Loading vm-startup...done Loading vm-startup... I then loaded all the .el files in lisp/vm by hand. Then vm worked correctly. If I understand correctly the purpose of vm-macro, then it should never be loaded at runtime, only at compile time. Steve, this looks like a simple packaging/byte-compiling screwup. It's a showstopper. On the other hand, I am using that very VM to send this message, so consider this a qualified success... Martin
