This bug report will be sent to the XEmacs Development Team,
not to your local site managers!!
Please write in English, because the XEmacs maintainers do not have
translators to read other languages for them.
In XEmacs 21.1 (patch 3) "Acadia" [Lucid] (sparc-sun-solaris2.5.1) of Wed Sep 29 1999 on bolzano
configured using `configure --compiler=/u/scratch/vroonhof/gcc-2.95/bin/gcc'
[Note: This 2.95 is a really a gcc 2.95 release candidate so it is suspect]
Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug
and the precise symptoms of the bug:
I close a gnuserv buffer (I think clicking on the "Done" button)

Is libgcc.a identical on barrios,bella,macallan and honegger?

jura, glenlivet, balblair and scapa I understand. glibc 2.1 binaries
will not work on an glibc 2.0 system
macallan is the wierd one!

This is the wierdest part: it should have worked on all machines.
I would have expected it to work on scapa....

One would have expected at least scapa to be interchangable :-(

Well.. The unexec code _was_ changed between 21.1.4 and 21.1.6, so it
must be it.
Could you try copying the 21.1.4 version of unexelf.c to 21.1.7 and
try (some of the combinations) again?
However looking at the path I cannot see what the problem is... On the
other hand with dumping any change can give mysterious results.
The only real code that should matter of ix86-linux is the .sbbs
dumping code which _should_ be in active.. Could you use objdump
--headers to see if anything changes between a build with .7 and the
.4 unexec?

Indeed, I never saw it. Note that this stat'ing seems to be due to
the Mule-specific double-loading.

I would agree with this. What is confusing about `redisplay' though,
is that, when the point is within invisible text, sometimes the cursor
is displayed, sometimes not. There does not appear to be any
consistency, that I can see. Maybe I'll have a look at the C sources.
As regards preventing the point ending up in in an invisible extent,
I guess I'll have another look at `line-move' in simple.el.

Then both are wrong the symptoms are just slightly different. You'll
see that when you do some non-trivial operations the cursor will
appear at the next visible line (this is apparently what FSF does
always). After moving to the next column on the invisible line the
cursor can disappear again. Apparently the redisplay code isn't sure
what it means to have point in an invisible extent.
I think this is just that this case that is hard to deal with if you
have a redisplay engine in the way XEmacs works. However instead of
trying to define what you should do if point is invisible it would be
better to fix the bug that makes it get there in the first place.

Yep, I can see that. However, this is exactly the same under FSF
Emacs, only the cursor does not disappear.
It would appear that when conducting a cursor down, the point goes
to the end of the next invisible extent, whereas, on the way back up,
the point goes to beginning of the next invisible extent. You can see
this if you evaluate `hide-extents' whilst in the "mmc-test-buffer"
and then evaluate `(point)' after each cursor up/down.
There's no consistency either -- the cursor appears OK when when
navigating up to the line with the text `Line: 3', despite the fact
that line-number-mode tells me I'm on physical line four, when the
text `Line: 3' is actually on physical line 5.
Still flummoxed. What gives here?
