As for the anonymous functions, I don't see what's wrong with this one. While maybe not the best style in Emacs, anonymous functions are a legitimate thing in Lisp. The binding doesn't bother me. "M-z del" isn't much harder than "M-z", and I can always rebind it. Just leave zap-to-char the way it is, and bind M-z to zap-up-to-char. (Actually, changing it makes a lot of sense, since "M-z del" is doable, but there is no "M-z undel".)
