I can't reproduce this with:
Oort Gnus v0.15
XEmacs 21.5 (beta10) "burdock" (+CVS-20030206)
And I can't remember having this problem with any previous versions of
either.

Perhaps try some less aggressive optimisation flags, configure without
'-cflags=...' and see what happens
