OP reported back, mentioning that the build done using --with-xim=no
(hopefully that's the same as --without-xim, the XEmacs build options confuse
me) does _not_ fix it, the same assertion failure is still there.
Then it's an X11 or UIM bug because with --xith-xim=no, XEmacs never
calls any functions related to input methods. There's nothing we can
do about it AFAICS.
