running gnuclient on different ports

Looking at the gnuclient and associated utilities, has anyone verified that this works using different ports? I tried this several times, but it appears that I always seem to lose the initial gnuserv that I started up. Unfortunately, I've worked around this using a tool that allows me to share a tty session and then I fire up xemacs using the -nw flag. Having gnuclient work with different ports would be better.
