Just a followup, I noticed that I only get the
gzip: stdin: invalid compressed data--crc error
error if I'm trying to decode a gzipped .c or .h file. If I change
the name of the file so that there is no .[ch] suffix, xemacs 21.0
decodes it fine.
xemacs 20.4 decodes .[ch] gzipped files fine.

Justin,
Thanks for the tip, it worked for solaris as I have some "stty"
lines, but under linux, I don't have any and I'm still having
problems.
Under linux when I open a gzipped file, the file seems to be
gunzipped, but the text is gunzipped incorrectly and I get the
following error from gzip:
gzip: stdin: invalid compressed data--crc error
