Dear Bug Team!
As a follow-up -- subprocesses still hang in in 21.5.9 I have
traced one of the hangs to mmencode -q, which seems to be called
by the package mel-q.elc.
Ditto, Info hangs on bunzip2-ing large files.
GNUS does work from the command-line
