XEmacs 21.4 redraw problem on Windows

As you can see, this is XEmacs 21.4.8-2, Cygwin version, on Windows 2000. I am running one of the many multi-desktop tools available for Windows -- sort of like fvwm for Unix. I have an xemacs window open on one desktop, working fine. I switch to another desktop. I switch back to the original one. If I now type at the xemacs window, nothing happens; the xemacs window's display does not change in any way. If I minimize then restore the window, the effect of whatever I typed is now visible, and subsequent keystrokes produce the expected immediate response. Mouse clicks have the same problem.
