string-to-syntax for XEmacs 21.4? 13 years, 3 months

GNU Emacs defines a string-to-syntax function in src/syntax.c. XEmacs, at least through 21.4, fails to provide this function. The latest version of python-mode (just released yesterday) uses this function in a number of places. In my poking around I noticed that other major mode implementations seem to use it as well Is there an Emacs Lisp version of this thing floating around somewhere that I can use or is there a way to easily get by without it? matlab+comint: works only for certain comint.el versions. 13 years, 3 months

Hello I wrote about this subject some month ago, but just now I found out that the problem occurs also with more recent versions of comint.el. The problem I describe occur for xemacs.21.4.21-mule -vanilla xemacs.21.5.29b -vanilla The issue is the following. Matlab is commercial product provided by Mathworks. If I am not mistaken it is released every 6 month. There is a lisp package, matlab.el, now maintained by Eric Ludlam, which helps editing matlab files but also allow to connect to the matlab engine via matlab-shell and it also allows to debug (In a way similar to the emacs shell command). The current version of matlab is 3.3.1. Now comes the issue: When I use an older version of matlab (release 2004) I have no problem to use the matlab-shell command. When I use a more recent version (release 2008, newer version I don't have), then there is the following problem. When I use comint.el from xemacs-base 2.10, everything is fine. But if I use either an older or a newer comint version, say from xemacs-base 2.19, then the matlab-shell command tries to start matlab but then I obtain an error M-Shell aborted There is no bugtrace and I have no idea how to debug it. There are a lot of changes between these two comint.el version so I don't know how to track down this error. Hi, According to the ChangeLog entry this file and "nt/site.def" are example files for X! And yes they do look like copies of these files as distributed with your X11! (I don't understand why they were added there in the first place!?) The comment about examples seems to be true as well. I find no reference to them from some other file. So these seems like good candidates for removal. Logic being: They are a part of another well known package and they are not used. (Am I missing something?) regexps 13 years, 3 months

Having not followed the politics in years, I don't know whether this is still considered heresy, but I have to ask: Isn't it about time that XEmacs supported the Perl/Python/Javascript regexp syntax? The world has moved on. Even if church dogma dictates that we still double-slashify all our parens in Lisp code, Perl's simpler syntax could still be supported for interactive commands. It's mostly the extra backslashing and lack of \s that drives me crazy on a daily basis. I suppose a bound variable around re-search-forward, to indicate the parsing style, would be the way to go. Hi, This time it is "modules/base64/Makefile" that is the item under investigation. I think we can include the file "modules/zlib/Makefile" as well since it seems to have the same history. I have done some analysis in order to follow these files but it is tricky. I don't even know if it helps that much. Read on and you'll be the judge of that. Anyway if I get it right the introduction of the modules directory seems to be attributed to William Perry. Somewhere around version 20.5. At that time there were Makefile.in's in the bae64 and zlib directories. These Makefile.in's were later replaced by plain Makefile's in 21.2.9. (February 1999?) From the ChangeLog it is not clear who did that change. Work with loadable modules are attributed to both Damon Lipparelli and J. Kean Johnston in that version but it could have been someone else who fixed the Makefiles. I believe these are the versions of the files we have today anyway. At some time later the other directories under modules got configurable Makefile.in.in but not zlib and base64. Maybe because these modules are not used? Oddly!? the very same Makefile is found here: http://autocad.xarch.at/lsp_tools/ntemacs/emodules/w32hhelp/ If the dates are correct there that file is younger than what we have. Maybe "ntemacs" gives some clue from where these Makefiles originates. They contain the text "Sample makefile for a simple Emacs module." which indicates they actually come from Emacs or!? Any suggestions on how to deal with these Makefiles?
