Hi, I compiled xemacs myself and installed into $HOME/xemacs-without-ipv6-cname
I then made a symlink of $HOME/xemacs-without-ipv6-cname/bin/xemacs to $HOME/bin/xemacs
I untarred the sumo tarball from http://ftp.xemacs.org/pub/xemacs/packages/xemacs-sumo-2009-02-17.tar.gz and untarred it into $HOME/xemacs-without-ipv6-cname/lib/xemacs, which made a directory called xemacs-packages there.
When I run xemacs, I am not able to update my packages.
I go to Tools -> Packages -> Set Download Site -> Official Releases -> US and choose US Main.
I then go "update package index" or any other command in the Tools menu about Packages and it complains: "symbol's value as variable is void: allow-remote-paths"
Can anyone help me with this? Thanks.

[Bug: 21.5-b29] packages UI: non-ideal handling of missing deps

Dear Bug Team!
I've been running into a lot of those "Cannot open load file: "
messages. I've just realized that this is probably because the package
management UI does not check dependancies unless explicitly requested
to do so; it would probably be a good idea to have an option
(defaulting to on) to have it do this automatically at the beginning
of `pui-install-selected-packages' (aka "x"). If the check fails, the
user should probably have a choice between "include dependancies",
"ignore dependancies", and "cancel".
Also, having realized this, I tried to fix it with just
`pui-add-required-packages', but that refused to do anything unless I
selected at least one package first; perhaps this check should be
removed?
Of course, I'm a bit of an XEmacs newbie, so maybe I'm coming at this
all wrong, but even so I'm sure that improvements can be made (to help
newbies come at it from a better angle, if nothing else).

that needs to be done to finalize the GPLv3 transition? What state

[21.5-b29] two japan-utils.el's

Symbol's function definition is void: kana-keyboard-define-keys
This is what I get when building No Gnus in the Japanese locale
using XEmacs 21.5-b29. A workaround is to set LC_ALL to C. In
that case XEmacs runs with the -no-autoloads option. Probably
you may reproduce this problem like the following:
LC_ALL=ja_JP.UTF-8 xemacs -no-autoloads
In relation to this, I realized there are two japan-utils.el's.
One is in lisp/mule/, the other is in the mule-base package,
the later is preferred because of load-path, and only it calls
`kana-keyboard-define-keys'. I guess I have to use the one in
lisp/mule/ because it looks newer than the one in mule-base.
Is it right? If so, how do I configure XEmacs 21.5-b29 so as to
prefer lisp/mule/ than that of mule-base in load-path? I used:

ugh. Should have expected that. Try this patch, which doesn't have
the fontcolor.c hunks in it, so should work on 21.5.29 or on Mercurial
tip.

[Bug: 21.5-b29] image-mode fails to handle XBM files correctly

According to the documentation of `make-image-specifier' (as well as
the error shown in the recent messages below), "xbm" images require a
list of three items for :data, but `image-mode' is just passing in the
buffer contents as a string.
It seems as though it would be rather a lot of work to parse data in
XBM file-format out of a buffer into a data spec in elisp, considering
that the code to go from this format into an actual pixmap clearly
already exists in C, so I think XEmacs is being a bit unreasonable
here. (It does seem that Xlib shares this inability to accept data in
the file format from anything but a file -- one with a filename, even!
-- but if this isn't stopping XEmacs from loading them on Windows, I
don't see why it should stop XEmacs from loading them from strings of
data in the file format.)

Do you have the file src/fontcolor.c? If you are using an older
version of XEmacs 21.5, it won't be there. Ben made this change
(which is a stupid one, IMO) a few months ago but after 21.5.29. The
best thing to do would be to get the Mercurial head version.
Also, you can just delete everything related to fontcolor.c from the
patch. From the line
diff -r 9624523604c5 src/fontcolor.c
to just above
diff -r 9624523604c5 src/specifier.c
(Some unintelligible code was replaced with code I consider clearer
but it's functionally equivalent, and there was some documentation
that you don't really need.)
The important stuff is in the specifier.c part of the patch, which
should apply to your older version, I hope.

I hope not; that's part of the "(unless (featurep 'xemacs) ...)"
expression, so it should not be executed in any XEmacs since 19.12 or
before. The same thing is true of similar code in x-symbol-hooks.el.

No, actually most likely it's coming from x-symbol-mule-make-cset in
x-symbol-mule.el.

The key is here:

First, this is the first (lowest in the stack) place the bad data is
mentioned, I think. Second, x-symbol-make-cset is the last (highest
in stack) function from x-symbol. The two factors combined make it
highly probable that the problem is in the hand-off from
x-symbol-make-cset (which is actually an alias of
x-symbol-mule-make-cset) to face-property-matching-instance.
