[21.5-b28] Assertion failed at search.c:1487

XEmacs consistently crashed when doing a yank in to an empty buffer
which had flyspell and font-lock-prog-mode enabled. It didn't happen
if I used "xemacs -vanilla". flyspell-version was 1.6h. XEmacs
version was 21.5-b28 (+CVS-20070924).
A web search highlighted a few other people who had crashes in similar
places in search.c place, but with different backtraces.
I didn't find a fix posted, so perhaps this extra information will be
of use.

This sounds like a separate problem from the annoying "space in the
directory name confuses comint" bug that you had previously reported,
right?
In any case, I don't see the behavior you described above in a current
XEmacs build. Can you try installing:
http://ftp.xemacs.org/pub/xemacs/windows/testing/XEmacs_Setup_21.4.20-200...
and seeing how that works for you?
I've copied Jerry James, because he knows more about comint than
anyone else on the XEmacs team. Jerry, do you perhaps have a lead on
how comint becomes confused when the directory name contains a space?
And more importantly, how to fix it?

I was almost going to suggest that, or something similar: Add an `X' button
to (all) mode lines at the far right, which when clicked would delete the
window. Did you mean something like that (but just for the startup display)?
This is a good idea, in a general way, but I have one concern.
Normally the X to close a window is at the TOP right corner.
If there is an X at the right on a mode line, I think users
might suppose it refers to the window below it. Then when
it instead deletes the window above the mode line, they
will be surprised.

If you look at what can be executed (assuming that a wild pointer
hasn't overwritten the return address, in which case of course
anything can happen), it's the code that outputs the stack trace.
So AFAICS, what this means is that if you encounter an assertion
failure while autosaving in a fatal error (and that's really the only
place you can trigger this AFAICS), you don't get any chance of
getting a stack trace at all. Not for the original fatal error and
not for the assertion.
What is the practical problem with keeping the code as it is?

I am sending this to xemacs-beta as well as xemacs-patches because I
expect that not everyone will be totally sanguine about this patch.
Nevertheless, I think it is a good idea.
Here is the rationale. With the current code, the assert() macro can
return even when its argument evaluates to false. This can happen if
fatal_error_in_progress is true when assert_failed() is entered.
Somewhere back in the mists of time, somebody had the idea that we
shouldn't shut down in that case, because user data might be lost.
Guess what? It's lost anyway. If we return from assert_failed(), then
the universe makes no sense to the code that called assert(). We just
determined that an assumption that code relies on does not hold.
Anything can happen. In many cases, that "anything" is a segfault. My
contention is that assert_failed() should not return under ANY
circumstances, otherwise we're heading into random behavior land.
FWIW, emacs behaves in the way I consider sensible. If you trigger an
assertion failure while already handling an assertion failure or fatal
error, emacs shuts down immediately.
I'm not entirely certain that returning from a failed assert is the
highly dubious kludge to which Jamie refers; if anyone knows otherwise,
I'll leave those comments in place.

flyspell: local abbrev in different languages

Some time ago I asked this the maintainer of flyspell. Alas flyspell
is no longer maintained. But may be someone with a good understanding
of the abbrev mechanism could answer the following question:
I am using flyspell for quite a time and like it very much. However
there is a small inconvenience.
I prefer to have flyspell-use-global-abbrev-table-p set to nil, in
order to have the abbrev saved in the local abbrev table.
However I use 3 languages, english, german and spanish.
Take the word region:
In spanish it is región but in english it is region.
In order that the word is corrected according to the language used,
using the abbrev table, the only possibility would be to have
a english, a spanish and a german abbrev table.
Could that be included in flyspell?

There was a thread that leaked over as a cross-post from
emacs-devel(a)gnu.org entitled "New splash screen annoyance ..." or
something like that, which is totally irrelevant to XEmacs, except
perhaps via the "you have to read your victims their rights at
interactive startup if the Original Work does so" clause of the GPL
(if it means "verbatim", which I don't think it does, we might have to
copy the aforementioned annoyance, and you might want to know why).
So I nuked it, all 3 posts from DAK, 11 posts from Drew Adams, and
something like 13 posts from RMS, not to mention a half dozen from
Random Hackers.
If anybody wants me to, I'll post an URL to the archives on savannah
(or even a digest), but it should be easy enough to find if you want
to.
