8859-1 == Chinese should be fixed now. There will be more of these
lurking; code identification is a neural-network kind of thing
(unfortunately without the learning part at this point).
If you get a misidentification, send a bug report with the expected
and actual encodings, the file (if you can legally/ethically do so),
and the value of LANG when you started XEmacs. (There are internal
variables that I should add to M-x report-xemacs-bug, but they're all
defaulted from LANG, and it's a pretty safe bet you don't mess with
them directly.)
Losing encoding information on revert? Please be more specific.

I am happy to have had your help in identifying bugs in the sync, but I
don't understand why you think you have to maintain a distinct local
copy. Can't you just stick with the officially released packages? If
you are installing test packages, then you've agreed to be a tester.
And you've been a good one, so I hope you continue, but you shouldn't
feel like you are required to be a tester.

I don't see anything else in font-lock.el that makes an obtrusive change
to the user's environment.
As for the byte compiling issue, (require 'auto-autoloads) is not the
right thing to do, because there are lots of auto-autoloads.el files,
one per package in fact. It is true that this is just to quiet a byte
compiler warning. That may be considered a small thing by some, but I
try to get rid of such warnings whenever I touch a package. I have this
dream that, eons from now, some XEmacs developer may be able to notice
that there were 2 warnings when compiling the packages and go fix the
problem. Right now, we get so many warnings that they are nearly
worthless.
We could drop the require of font-lock and get the warning back. I'm
not terribly concerned about this, though, because (1) we distribute the
packages in precompiled form, which is good enough for the vast majority
of users; and (2) anybody who needs to compile their own due to
maintaining local variations should be sophisticated enough to deal with
a change in find-file-hooks.

I have not heard from anyone. No problem with the delay. It's not like
I'm paying for this stuff!
The shell I am using is cmd.exe from \WINDOWS\system32\ on Windows XP
SP2. There was more information in my original e-mail about what
exactly happens:
I start up a shell with M-x shell. The shell starts up on C drive.
Then at the prompt I type "cd Prog" and then press the Tab key. The
command is completed as "cd Program Files\" which is what I would
expect.
I press the Enter key. If I do a "dir" at this point I will see one
of the subdirectories is XEmacs.
At a prompt I type "cd XE" and press the Tab key. I get the error "No
completions of XE". However if again I type "cd Prog" and press Tab
it completes to "cd Program Files\" again. The shell buffer is no
longer
keeping track of the current directory it seems.
Let me know if you have any other questions.

I think that I might need to get something like (add-hook
'vhdl-mode-hook 'my-vhdl-mode-hook)
into C:\Documents and Settings\douga\.xemacs\custom.el
on my windows xp machine. Is there a website around that gives the
install steps?
I have the vhdl-mode-3.33.16.tar.gz file on my desktop.

[Bug: 21.5-b25] dired messes up DOS line-encoding handling

Dear Bug Team!
When one loads dired, and afterwards loads a text file with DOS
line-encoding (i.e., with CR-LF endings), the line-encoding is
correctly parsed, but not represented in buffer encoding state. When
the file is changed and written out again, all line-endings have been
converted to LF.
How to create the issue, with the appended file intro-dos.txt:
-- Start
xemacs -vanilla .
-- C-x C-f intro-dos.txt
-- Mode line shows Raw and not Raw:T
-- Change something, C-x C-s
-- Saved file has now LF line-endings.
As always, If I can help any further to track down the problem, I'm
willing to invest more work. But I would need your guidance where to
look -- I don't want to check the whole dired code if it messes
with coding-systems somewhere.

In the new vc from http://koti.welho.com/vskytta/xemacs/new-vc/ , I have
just found a bug:
M-x vc-print-log on a cvs versioned file gives me a log output (good) and

XEmacs 21.4.20 No text on buttons, no root to hierachy, no help, no nothing...

Hi,
I'm not having any luck building XEmacs 21.4.20 (and getting it to actually work) on Slackware with 2.6.17.13 kernel, gtk+1.2.10, gtk+2.8.20 and gcc 3.4.6.
I've lost track of the different ways I've tried to configure it. The problems are the same no matter whether I use a vanilla configure, or try --with-gtk in combination with or without gtk specified for scrollbar, menubars, etc. I did a bunch of searches and tried the few variations on configure options I could find but the result was always the same.
When I start XEmacs from a terminal I get a slew of messages saying that there isn't an obvious root for the XEmacs hierarchy. The xemacs executable is in /usr/local/bin and it is a symlink to the versioned-executable. (There is also a *.dmp in /usr/local/bin which is quite hideous- is something broken or is that intentional?) The libraries went into /usr/local/lib/xemacs-21.4.20/
The next problem is that all the button across the top are just grey squares with no text. Many of the pulldown menus also don't work, everything's greyed or gives error messages, even Help -> about.
I didn't find anything relevant in the PROBLEMS file nor on the XEmacs website.
Where, oh where did I go wrong?
