profiling XEmacs, esp. on the C level

So far, it seems that everyone's profiling on the Lisp level. But C
level profiling could give much better results. Has anyone successfully
used Gprof or the VC++ tools for doing C-level profiling? When i tried
in the past, i got stuck; things crashed and i couldn't get them to
work. Any success stories and instructions telling what exactly to do?

I've managed to get this crash on Fedora Core 3 while using, as you might have
guessed, Gnus.
I've also seen asserts while recompiling the core lisp core on FC3 and Solaris
10, but frustratingly I haven't managed to reproduce these when I tried to

I tried updating from cvs and I see your changes you just committed,
but I still have to apply these changes to get a gtk xemacs to
compile. This is on Fedora Core 4 with gcc 4.0.1. GTK version
seems to be 1.2.10.
I get the following error using purely the cvs version.

Dear Mike,
I discovered another problem with XEmacs in connection with AUCTeX under
Suse 9.3, which I will describe below.
A detailed system info for my XEmacs instalation follows at the end of this
email.
The current state of AUCTeX on my PC is as follows:

Let us now assume that my cursor is at the veginning of the first line
\begin{subequations}
of this environment. Then, the command ^c^q^e should try to format the
whole document. XEmacs -- or rather AUCTeX -- also tries to do this. It
starts ro format and counts the progress until it reaches 90%. Then,
XEmacs freezes and has to be killed.
If I try to get out of the frozen XEmacs via the command ^k^x, the whole
PC freezes and can only be started by turning electricity off and on.
This problem occurs both under KDE and Gnome.

i can now compile and run with unicode-internal and even load up
etc/HELLO, where i duly see "zdravstvuite" in cyrillic and "geia sas" in
greek. the three versions of the first char after GB/JIS/KSC all report
the same char values, which is a good sign. the big5 chars appear as ~;
this is because they are encoded using the fake big5-1/big5-2 charsets,
which unicode-internal knows nothing about. probably i should redo
etc/HELLO to use extended segments to encode big5. old-mule has
improvements, too; it knows how to handle arbitrary unicode chars (at
least, anything up through 0x31FFF) and allows more charsets than before
-- 96 private in dimension 1 and another 96 private in dimension 2.
more testing needed before it will be committed and font-handling in
unicode-internal still needs an overhaul.

Has someone managed to compile XEmacs with (0$) Microsoft Visual C++
Toolkit 2003? I'd rather use more recent beta in Windows, but compiling
XEmacs is rather complicated.

Hi folks,
I figured it was about time I showed my face again. I'm sorry for the
long delay, but things did not go quite as planned around here. We
arrived in Logan, Utah on June 1st, as planned. However, not as
planned, the truck containing all our junk, er, stuff, did not show up
until June 3rd due to a sudden illness on the part of the driver. We
also got snow that first week we were here, making the whole thing a
rather surreal experience.
On June 16, I made a Wal-Mart run (because you *need* tons of stuff from
Wal-Mart after moving a family of 6 cross-country). A light up ahead
turned red, the people in front of me stopped, so it seemed like a good
idea at the time for me to stop, too. Unfortunately, the guy behind me
didn't think that stopping was such a great idea. Witnesses said that
his brake lights never came on. I was doing 0 MPH. He hit me doing an
estimated 40 MPH. (It turns out that he was reading a piece of paper
lying on his passenger seat, rather than watching where he was steering
his large van.) My car was totaled, pretty much every vertebrae in my
neck and back was jolted out of alignment, and I had various other
bruises and scrapes. I spent the summer in physical therapy, and
falling asleep at odd times because of the powerful pain killers I was
on. I have spent the fall playing catch-up, due to not getting a bunch
of stuff done this summer that I was planning on having accomplished.
That has left me no time for hobbies, including XEmacs.
In any case, the light at the end of the tunnel is starting to become
visible. I'm hoping that I can manage a return to something resembling
activity on XEmacs around the new year. If anything urgent has come up
that I am responsible for, please let me know and I'll try to work it in
before then. Otherwise, look for me to resubscribe to the mailing lists
around then.
