Startup timings 18 years, 6 months

Just for information, on src/xemacs -geometry +0+0 -vanilla -q -kill which takes 3.12s on my laptop (which is horribly long) on an optimized, no debug, no kkcc, no mc-alloc compile, the biggest time users are: 79% init-x-win 7% startup-load-autoloads 6% init-mule-at-startup C startup (including pdump_load) is negligible btw. init-mule-at-startup is actually way slower (similar time to init-x-win) with cold disk cache too. I'm going to try to find why init-x-win is so slow. OG.

redefining "mule" 18 years, 6 months

the term "mule" is less and less appropriate to anything we're doing. I think that once we switch to Unicode internal, we should switch to speaking of "international" or some other new stuff and let "Mule" refer to the old implementation of internationalization. FSF's multilingual support is not called "Mule", either. ben

enable-foo vs. with-foo is illogical 18 years, 6 months

There is absolutely no logic to whether an option is with-FOO or enable-FOO. This should be fixed. Why don't we just dump this distinction entirely and have everything be with-FOO?

run-mode-hooks undefined Windows, possible workaround 18 years, 6 months

Current Windows native build, as distributed through www.xemacs.org breaks when used with current packages. This has been discussed before. Adding relevant functions from later XEmacs version to .emacs seems to fix the problem. How about adding this to the FAQ? XEmacs 21.5 and Gnus fancy splitting. 18 years, 6 months

I am having problems getting Gnus fancy splitting to work as expected on 21.5. The problem is that messages frequently fail to match their expected rules and end up in the catch all group. Below is a sample of the splitting rules that I use: (setq nnmail-split-methods 'nnmail-split-fancy nnmail-split-fancy '(| ("Subject" "NETGEAR Security Log" "mail.netgear_logs") (: spam-split) (from "xemacs-beta-.*(a)xemacs.org" "xemacs-beta") (from "xemacs-design-.*(a)xemacs.org" "xemacs-design") (from "xemacs-patches-.*(a)xemacs.org" "xemacs-patches") (from "xemacs-review-.*(a)xemacs.org" "xemacs-review") ;; Unmatched mail goes to the catch all group. "mail.misc")) Mostly the messages end up in mail.misc but occasionally (in circumstances that I'm yet to determine) messages are put in the right place. This is with the latest CVS Gnus and XEmacs HEAD. The same Gnus installation and configuration work as expected when using 21.4.17. The problem remains when XEmacs is built with and without Mule, run on Mac OS X or Fedora Core 3, with and without spam splitting and with when fancy splitting nnmail or nnimap. aset/aref for char-tables, range-tables etc. 18 years, 6 months

i originally decided that it was a bad idea to allow aset/aref to operate over char-tables and range-tables, like FSF does. but now i'm not so sure. for one, i recently added a change to use char-tables in place of 256-element vectors for the return value of `make-display-table', and code in w3 and x-symbol (and probably elsewhere) broke. but more to the point, i'm influenced by python, which uses [] for accessing arrays and hash tables ("dictionaries"), including ranges in arrays (the slice notation); and both char-tables and range-tables are basically just sparse arrays, with some optimizations. comments? stephen?

M-: (set-coding-priority-list '(utf-8)) RET should give you a much better experience, but I can't promise it's optimal. Watch out for single-byte encodings such as ISO-8859 and KOI-8 being incorrectly detected. If you have trouble, we can try tuning the list.
