`with-timeout' - can XEmacs do it _without_ fsf-compat? 20 years, 3 months

I'm trying to figure out a way of implementing `with-timeout' (it's in timer.el) _without_ having to require the fsf-compat package. In older xemacsen (and lemacs) this worked: (x-get-selection-internal 'PRIMARY 'TARGETS) ==> [ TARGETS TIMESTAMP TEXT STRING LENGTH FILE_NAME OWNER_OS HOST_NAME USER CLASS NAME CLIENT_WINDOW PROCESS COMPOUND_TEXT] Apparently x-get-selection-internal has been replaced by get-selection-internal, but the TARGETS type no longer works: (get-selection-internal 'PRIMARY 'TARGETS) ==> nil This makes it impossible to do tell what selection types other apps support, and thus makes it way harder to do any kind of sensible content-negotiation. -- Jamie Zawinski jwz(a)jwz.org http://www.jwz.org/ jwz(a)dnalounge.com http://www.dnalounge.com/

problems with Xemacs 21.5.16 in Mac OS X "Panther" 20 years, 3 months

I have successfully compiled Xemacs-21.5.16 for Mac OS X 10.3.2 (Panther), and installed the xemacs sumo package. Everything seems to work OK, except for two apparent bugs: 1) By default, "Active regions" is on (in the Options-> Editing menu). However, when I double click on a word or select text with the cursor Xemacs beeps, and the following cryptic message appears in the status bar: Symbol's value as variable is void: region 2) More annoyingly, when I select text (after turning "Active regions" off, otherwise I get error 1) and press the Delete key only the character next to the cursor is deleted, not the entire selection. This is so even when "Ovestrike" is selected in the Options-> Editing menu. For the record, both problems are absent when I revert to Xemacs-21.5.9 (installed via the "fink" package manager). The problems have nothing to do with my init.el or custom.el files, since I can reproduce them if I start Xemacs with "xemacs -q". Any help would be much appreciated! Is it just a coincidence that "Motif" > contains two thirds of "Not"? :-) Yeah, and that it's a bastard child of HP, IBM, Sun and few other now non-existent companies trying to emulate Windows3.11 ;| Gtk is a whole heap nicer but for some reason which I couldn't be bothered getting figured out yesterday configure wasn't finding my gtk libs. Anyway, pulled current from cvs, built it -- still got the failure with Snarf-documentation -- but the crash described earlier did not occur.
