Committers: take care not to trash etc/package-index.LATEST.gpg 21 years

... until somebody gets around to fixing the bug where this file is found by the package utilities. If you are running recent 21.5 in place, pui can and will assume the package-index in the source distribution is the index you want to use, and happily overwrite it. A simple solution seems to be just changing the name of that file to package-index.BOOTSTRAP.gpg (I guess that pui will still put its indices in $srcdir/etc/package-index.LATEST.gpg if you're running in place, but pui changes to that file will no longer be reflected on every CVS commit). PUI and PGP 21 years

Hi Gang! I have just committed a patch to turn the PGP verification stuff back on in PUI (I had temporarily turned it off). I'm looking for testers. What you need: Latest CVS HEAD Mailcrypt package installed. A working GnuPG or PGP executable of some kind. The only "configuring" you should need to do is with GnuPG, and there all you really need to do is add to ~/.gnupg/gpg.conf: keyserver-options auto-key-retrieve keyserver x-hkp://pgp.mit.edu (just my setting, you don't have to use this keyserver). What to do: Something with PUI, quite a few things will trigger the PGP verification: Tools -> Packages -> Set Download Site -> choose Tools -> Packages -> List and Install M-x package-get-package-provider RET patch-keywords RET M-x package-get-info RET gnus RET maintainer RET (Try that last one with a prefix arg and you'll see why I use it _all_ the time.) What I want to know: Of _any_ problems you had. As long as you have a working GnuPG and have Mailcrypt installed, everything should run smooth as silk. [Success [partial, again]] XEmacs 21.5-b13 "cauliflower" (+CVS-20030513) powerpc-apple-darwin6.6 21 years

The log below is for the version of XEmacs that did dump properly and is running. However, I had to run through configure and rebuilding a number of times to get this version to compile. I was able to get a lisp backtrace of the failing version (appended after the test results). The C stack trace is the same as I have reported before as it occurred in exactly the same way and at the same place--when XEmacs tries its post-dump loads. In the past few months when I have seen this crash the C stack trace has always been the same (with only minor differences because of changes in the C code). But this is the first time XEmacs dumped the Lisp backtrace. How I have come to fix these failures to complete the make seems rather bizarre, not unlike throwing salt over the shoulder. When I see the problem, I rebuild (from clean sources) with all error checking, debugging, the -g flag for gcc, and automatic test running. That always seems to produce a working, although slow, XEmacs. However, I find that I can turn around then and without issuing `make clean' or `make realclean' get a working version by reconfiguring and recompiling with whatever options I want (except -O to gcc). This includes --with-union-type which is usually off. A clean build will often result in the same crash again. I think this is strange behavior. What does --debug change about the code that might prevent the problem? And what does the failure to `make [real]clean' leave behind that does not get recompiled which might have an effect?
