In the file SRC/lisp/startup.el lines 549-557 the following code sets
version-control based on the VERSION_CONTROL environment setting:

The problem with this comes when running 'make install' and the system goes
through a late iteration of dumping a working XEmacs. The program is in
batch mode and does not expect to answer user input. But version-control
expects to find out whether to delete excess copies of the generated
autoload files. This triggers an assertion.
Shouldn't there also be a test for whether we are in batch mode? Or perhaps
batchmode should deal with user input prompting. Does any request that
leads to a prompt with a needed answer cause batch mode to fail with an
assertion?

I experiemented a bit with my problem. If something is signalled the
condition-case in function find-file-noselect will kill the buffer and
signal the error again (I think otherwise the signal would be lost). The
cause of my problem was a function, called by after-find-file (so I guess
the function is in the find-file hooks).
I put a new condition-case around the call of after-find-file, which simply
write a string to an buffer to report the error. By this I prevent a
buffer-kill. I know this can not be the solution, but I am not shure what is
the right one:
1) Move the after-find-file behind the condition-case
2) Selectively kill the newly opened buffer (either by signal or by
a variable, which is set if I reach after-find-file)
3) Do the additional condition-case with an appropiate reaction
BTW, if I uncomment the condition-case I get the following backtrace,
showing the problem is near the semantic bovinator:

xemacs-patches archive searching broken?

The search page for the xemacs-patches mailing list archive seems to be
returning incomplete results.
My procedure is:
1) Goto <http://list-archive.xemacs.org/xemacs-patches/>
2) Search for "Carbon" with all options left at their defaults.
This returns matches for 4 files, the earliest being in September this year.
My understanding is that is should return all messages containing 'Carbon'
back to 1998, of which there are more than 4. It's certainly missing the
message <http://list-archive.xemacs.org/xemacs-patches/200305/msg00078.html>
which was posted back in May.
Other oddities are:
1) Restricting the search for "Carbon" to May 2003 matches no files.
2) Restricting the search for "Carbon" to the last year (Nov 2003 - Dec 2002)
generates the following errors:

Address for W3 bugs

Is there an address where I can report bugs in W3? It's not entirely
obvious what that address should be from browsing the sources, the
README and BUGS files.
I tried to mail the mailing list at gnu.org, but got no responses, and
the mailing list archives show a lack of any activity in the past
year.
Is W3 being maintained at all? If the answer is "no", shouldn't we
either take over maintainership or drop it from the packages if we
can't find a suitable maintainer?

message body if I switch to post-mode in mid-composition, but not when
the buffer initially opens.

I have not looked at the patch, but vetoing it on the principle that
the Great Font Unification will be impeded by this work is not
conducive to progress, in my opinion.

more than 16 colors in xterm?

having had my last problem solved for me instnataneously (thanks!), I
can't resist trying this one out:
I work mostly within the xterm (xemacs -nw...), and I've customized all
my fontlock colors to work in the terminal. Everything's fine, but I
still do wish I could get more than the 16 standard xterm colors when
in xterm. The manual seems to suggest that I can do this somehow, but
I haven't had any luck. Is there an easy way?
