Hi,
I've been seeing xemacs abort in the following code in window.c:

now and then. I cannot reliably reproduce the problem, but here
are the two scenarios that seem to trigger it:
1. With an xemacs running at work, I ssh in from home and use
gnuclient to make a new frame onto my home machine. I read email
using VM and GNUS and at some point it goes poof. This happens
maybe one time out of five.
2. Running an xemacs locally, I hit keys I have bound in my window
manager to iconify xemacs' only frame and it goes poof. This case
happens much less frequently than #1.
Below is the top of a lisp backtrace from over the weekend (case 1
above). I could also try to get a C backtrace/core dump if helpful.
I'd be happy to insert some debugging print statements if there's any
info that would help someone debug this. For now I have recompiled
with the abort() commented out.

If "xemacs -vanilla" (21.5-b11 or 21.4.12) is run with the following X
resources set:
XEmacs.default.attributeForeground: white
XEmacs.default.attributeBackground: midnightblue
You see all sorts of display cruft along the outer edges of the frame.
Random grey lines appear frequently when listing completions and
aborting out of completion listing commands. For example,
C-x C-f <space>
results in a grey line drawn along the bottommost pixel or two of the
frame (under the minibuffer). If I then do:
C-g
I'm left with a short vertical grey bar along the left edge of the
frame where the modeline was for the split window when showing
completions. This is not completely deterministic, sometimes
everything is fine, other times the vertical bar extends along the
whole extent of what was the upper window.
If I load a file (C-x C-f) and then kill the buffer (C-x k <RET>) then
the entire left edge of the frame has a two pixel wide vertical grey
line. C-l clears it.
I can send screenshots if anyone is interested.
The bug does not appear in 21.4.6 (as distributed with RH 7.3).
The problems show whether or not the buffers-tab is on or off, though
I suspect has something to do with that code or the code supporting
it.

Need Chinese/Japanese fonts to display Russian texts!

Yes, really! In XEmacs MULE 21.5 (and 21.4 too).
Cyrillic letters are being displayed correctly in XEmacs under MULE, that's
true. BUT! many files, written in Russian, espesially in news groups contain
non-cyrillic graphic characters. Examples are: "em dash" and "en dash", single
and double quotes [1] in cp1251, box drawing in koi8-r.
XEmacs maps codepoints that correspond to the mentioned chars into chinese and
japanese charsets. I don't have ISO-2022 on my hands, but I am pretty sure
that the standard positions those chars in Far East charsets.
This leads to a funny result -- when opening a text file in RUSSIAN, XEmacs
warns that it can not instantiate fonts for JAPANESE (CHINESE, KOREAN)!

That is not a problem, but an annoying inconvenience.
I see severals ways to fix it.
1. Add entries to display table that map graphic characters to reasonable
substitutions (e.g. "en dash" to "-", "em dash" to "--").
2. Introduce a new non-standard charset that contains such characters and
specify a particular display policy for it.
3. Wait until full Unicodizing internals and hope the problem will disappear.
Current implementation of Unicode support maps box drawing and friends to
Far East charsets.

[Bug: 21.4.13] improper font lock coloration when frames on different device-types / background types

Dear Bug Team!
I've been playing with starting an xemacs on a tty and then using
make-frame-on-display to create an X11 one, but have been running into
some fun coloration issues.
If I explicitly specify colors as attached to frame-types, things work
well:

If I rely upon frame-background-type, the right thing does not
happen. The colors are those of the original mode. (i.e. if the
first frame is 'tty-frame (and I generally use a black background in a
terminal) the background-type is dark.. My 'x-frames are light
colored, and have a light background type.
(get-frame-background-mode (get-frame-for-buffer (current-buffer)))
returns appropriately on each evaluation even if the same buffer is
displayed in two frames.
A simple example of a mode that relys on light/dark is hyper-appros.

But sadly, it doesn't render the colors properly.
HOW TO REPLICATE:

coloration in the Hyper-Appropos buffer is wrong, it's assuming a dark
background instead of a light one.
GUESS:
It looks like the light/dark background REQ specifier (see
defface) isn't matching properly.
If I explicitly set frame-background-mode to light in a frame, and then
execute a custom-set-faces...

... _all_ frames turn red, ignoring the background mode.

Hi!
I get crashes with traces as the one enclosed here rather often
recently when reading or sending mails in Gnus, in fact after applying
Stephen's patch. Is this just another representation of the GC bug or
some other bug?
