Dear Bug Team!
I did an ediff-files, which worked fine. I quit the session, then did
an ediff-buffers with some other buffers. This crashed emacs. I have
done ediff-buffers successfully in the past.

XEmacs 21.4.6 & VHDL Mode

Hi,
I've just downloaded xemacs v21.4.6 from
http://ftp.ru.xemacs.org/pub/xemacs/binaries/win32/installshield/ running on
windows2000.
I was previously using v21.1.9 and had vhdl-mode installed and running with
no problems.
When I now load a .vhd file I see the following message displayed by xemacs,
and the vhdl support is not available:
File mode specification error: (invalid-byte-code "variable reference to
constant symbol :prefix")
Is there an issue with v21.4.6 or am I just not doing it right?

I thought Ben had torn out the entire process-handling infrastructure in
21.5 and shoved most of it into Lisp.

... but, checking, I see that PROCESS_LIVE_P() and friends live on,
although kill-process looks marginally safer.
OK. this needs to be done in 21.5 too, then. I'll do that.

Yes:) but I frobbed the semantics of some of the other stuff
(set-process-output-coding-system and the like), on the basis that
sending output to a dead process is useless at best and maybe even
harmful (data-loss).
(Er, that is, I frobbed the semantics by not frobbing the code.
Damn, renames are confusing. :) )

Thanks for testing, yep, I followed the directions, several times. :)
I guess it must be a firewall issue here. It used to work (July 2001), but
apparently our IT department has changed something in that time that is now
blocking access :(
Does anyone know just off hand which ports CVS pserver needs open to work
properly? Looking at the address, it appears 2401 must be one of them.
Any others?

password, cvs. Any suggestions as to what the problem might be would be
appreciated.

Dear Bug Team!
I tried this with plain 21.4.7 and now with the patched version. I
*didn't* try it with previous versions for Windows.
I can't get packages to update -- when I do 'List and Install', at the
moment when xemacs logs on some support site (chosen previously by 'Add
Download Site'), it freezes completely. I have to kill it from the task
manager.

* XEmacs 21.4.7 "Economic Science (Windows [1])" is released.
"Economic Science" is the eighth in the OXYMORON series.
XEmacs 21.4.7 "Economic Science (Windows [1])" is the third in a series of
MS-Windows focused releases of XEmacs. The intent of this release
series is to provide source and binary distributions of the XEmacs
21.4.x series with any additional fixes or enhancements necessary to
provide a pleasurable editing experience on the MS-Windows platform.
The original 21.4.7 windows release contained a significant process-handling
related bug which was caused by two different changes. These changes have
been reverted so that M-x shell, amongst other things, works once again.
Source is available via cvs at cvs.xemacs.org. This release has the
release tag r21-4-7-windows and the most current snapshot will always
have the tag 21-4-windows.
The binaries for both cygwin and native MS-Windows are available via
the XEmacs netinstaller which can be found at
http://www.xemacs.org/Download/win32/setup.exe This version of the
installer is 1.2.2.11.2.9.

system. I think you can write DCOP "scripts" in sh/python
whatever to remotely control an app. I don't know that you could
access KIO_Protocols. Now if the app you are talking to has only
the job of feeding information back to Emacs then we are talking
something that might be possible via DCOP.
