Please also include any C or lisp back-traces that you may have. ================================================================ Dear Bug Team! I installed XEmacs 21.4.6 today. I was asked wether I wanted to migrate .emacs to .xemacs or something. I answered no, because my .emacs is carefully crafted to work on BOTH platforms. Something was saved in my .emacs. Strange. I checked the beginning and the end of the file, but found nothing. Ok, I do what I wanted to do and forget about it. Just now I start my Emacs again, and notice that something is a bit odd. Hm... Some customization must have changed. And what did I find? Imagine my ire, my blazing hate, the sheer unbelievability of it. This is what I find: ... ;; Customization code. These entries are usually generated automatically (custom-set-variables '(load-home-init-file t t)) ;; When using XEmacs, save customizations in another file! ;; When using Emacs 21, save customizations in another file! (when (featurep 'xemacs) (setq custom-file "~/.xemacs") (load "~/.xemacs")) ... Ah. That must have been what XEmacs saved... This load-home-init-file stuff. But wait a second, why wasn't it saved in my ~/.xemacs file? AND WHERE ARE ALL MY OTHER CUSTOMIZATIONS I LOVE SO MUCH? My oldest backup is several months old. My customization was overwritten. 2. The customization was not written to custom-file. Ok, usually my reports are friendlier. But this hit me where I did not expect it. I would dearly love to say that it's all the fault of the custom code. But that is not it. I LIKE custom. I use it a lot. It usually does what I expect. This is the same old init file problem that bugged me in a previous release -- at the time XEmacs kept nagging me to migrate. Perhaps I should... ANNOUNCEMENT and WARNING: ben-mule-21-5 is now offially merged in. 22 years, 2 months

For an [admittedly incomplete] list of changes, see new file CHANGES-ben-mule in the top level. There is also some other information in README.ben-mule-21-5 and TODO.ben-mule-21-5, although it's not very well organized; and there's information in various source files, usually near the top -- e.g. in src/config.h.in and in src/intl-encap-win32.c. I have tested it fairly thoroughly on Windows and Cygwin+XFree86 [which catches most Unix problems, since I can run under X Windows], but there undoubtedly will be problems on other platforms and in parts of the file that didn't get tested and normally aren't hit except by certain people. NOTE: There are still some test suite failures. No crashes, though, and none of the test suite failures are very important at all except possibly that the md5 code seems to not be working too well right now. In fact, many of the failures have to do with problems in the test suite itself rather than in the actual code, and I'll fix all these problems within a day. For the meantime, I'd like to see everybody test it out on normal operations and see what problems come up. I'm sure there are going to be a fair number, and consequently a large amount of instability in the next few days, which should straighten itself out again by the end of this week, if not sooner. All comments should be sent to ben(a)xemacs.org -- when sending to a mailing list, make sure to Cc: ben(a)xemacs.org. I see email much faster when it has my email address in the headers than when it doesn't. Also, clearly tag your bug report, e.g. by adding [MERGED-BEN-MULE] at the beginning of the subject. That way, any reports that somehow or other don't get sent directly to me can still be easily filtered out. Question about syntax-table and regexes in term.el 22 years, 2 months

I'm using XEmacs 21.1.14 "Cuyahoga Valley" I'm very fond of using "tshell". But I've noticed a few problems with it... In particular, if you do something like prompt% !/ or prompt% !. you get stuck in an infloop with "Expanding history references..." in the echo area. I have tracked this down to the regexp on line 1478 in term.el: "!\\??\${\\(.+\$}\\|\$\\sw+\$\\)\$:?[0-9^$*-]+\$?" Breaking this down somewhat: ! literal "!" symbol \\?? zero or one literal "?" symbols \$ start group 1 { literal "{" symbol (why? - shouldn't this be optional?) \\( start group 2 .+ one or more chars \$ end group 2 } literal "}" symbol (why? - shouldn't this be optional?) \\| OR \$ start group 2 \\sw+ one or more characters with "word constituent" syntax \$ end group 2 \\) end group 1 \$ start group 3 :? zero or one colons [0-9^$*-]+ one or more digits or (^$*-) \$? end group 3, one or more occurences of group 3 Anyway, the problem is - the code in term-replace-by-expanded-history-before-point, when it finds an expression starting with "!", goes through the string with the above regexp, repeatedly doing (goto-char (match-end 0)) until the string is exhausted. And if you do something simple like "!/" or "!." it gets stuck because the characters / and . are not word-constituent in shell-mode's syntax table. / is symbol-constituent and . is punctuation. So the above regexp fails to produce a match... I see two fixes - one would be to change the syntax table for tshell mode - there are some character classifications I'd tend to disagree with - e.g. I really can't see why "&" is symbol-constituent but "." is punctuation, when "." is a valid part of identifiers (file names) and "&" is not... Or why "<" is symbol-constituent... I hestitate to submit a patch to change this because maybe I'm not really understanding the meanings of symbol-constituent and word-constituent and punctuation correctly. The other fix would be just to change the offending regexp. I tried changing the `\\sw' to `.' without ill effect... but before submitting a patch to do this I wanted to get some idea of what the authorial intention was. [BUG] Invalid constant: Unrecognized eol type, autodetect 22 years, 2 months

Latest CVS: echo -n foo > foo In xemacs: C-x C-f foo I get: Invalid constant: Unrecognized eol type, autodetect Works fine if foo has more than one line: echo -e "foo\nfoo\c" > foo I discovered this because I have some lisp that was saving a list to a file with a simple (format "%S" list). Easy enough to fix. Hassle was that I was loading this file as part of my init, so it took entirely too long to figure out what the real problem was. So, at a minimum, can the error message provide some idea as to what file was being loaded? Incidentally, compiling with --with-default-eol-detection results in a temacs that SEGVs during the loading of the first lisp file (update-elcs I think). Personally, I'd be happiest if I could just turn all this stuff off... -g
