dired and LC_ALL on Debian Woody 22 years, 8 months

Hello! I use Debian Woody on a i386 Linux box. I encountered that dired hangs after pressing "m" whenever the locales in /etc/profile are set to "de_DE" (yes, a German user) via "LC_ALL=de_DE; export LC_ALL". Buffers tab not showing up with 21.4.4 22 years, 8 months

In XEmacs 21.4 (patch 4) "Artificial Intelligence" [Lucid] (i686-pc-linux, Mule) of Sun Jul 29 2001 on ypy configured using `configure --prefix=/opt/xemacs --with-mule' Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug and the precise symptoms of the bug: If I start 21.4.3 with xemacs -vanilla, I see the buffers tab. If I start 21.4.4 with xemacs -vanilla, I don't see it. I also can't get it to show up from the menu or from the customize system. My current working theory is that when VM calls decode-coding-region on a region that contain one of those strange Windows-only characters like \222 it gets converted into something that's either invalid as a character or something unexpected by code further along. If you could provide a Lisp backtrace, we could determine whether it is VM or W3 that is croaking, and proceed accordingly. (require 'vm) (load "vm-mime.el") (setq debug-on-signal t) and then reproduce the problem to get the backtrace. I'm thinking that I should have VM enforce the iso-8859-1 encoding space by stripping the high bit off characters from 0200-0240.

Hi, Peter, Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortnately it does not work in my case. I reeinstalled from scratch 21.4.4 with --with-widgets=athena and --with-dialogs=athena (this time the last one was accepted by configure) to no avail - the same broken customization. But you never know. This fix an old problem nobody could help me with :-) Namely, I have now nice neat font on the menus. (Stephen Turnbul and Steve Young if I remember correctly, you might be interested of this if you remember the case).
