EFS feature suggestion: atomic saves

XEmacs already has two backup mechanisms, so I hesitate to suggest a third,
but I think it's warranted.
Autosaves save your data every n seconds in case of a program crash. That's
good.
Backups save your data on every save, so you have a minimal form of revision
tracking and recovery. Also good, meeting a different need.
But what I'd really like to see is, when invoking write-file on a remote
file, for EFS to transfer the file to a temporary file on the remote
location, and then - iff the transfer succeeds - immediately rename the file
to it's proper filename. Maybe an option to do things the old way, but I
can't at the moment think of any case why this new behavior wouldn't be an
improvement, unless there are systems that don't support renaming via FTP.
Impetus: Right now, I'm having all sorts of connectivity problems. If the
socket gets destroyed or confused while EFS is in mid-write, the file at the
other end gets truncated. Not good. It can be argued that this is a
failure in the ftpd implementation, not EFS, but I suspect that most other
FTP applications aren't repeatedly overwriting the same filename, so it goes
unnoticed.
I've lost two source files in three days this way. How difficult would it
be, and is my proposal the right way to do it? I'd offer to code it, but
something tells me this isn't a particularly good project for a novice elisp
programmer.. just a hunch, you know.

Help test EFS

Steve Youngs has just released EFS package version 1.25. This is an
experimental prerelease of EFS available as
/ftp.xemacs.org:/pub/xemacs/beta/experimental/packages/efs-1.25-pkg.tar.gz
In order to turn this into an official package release, I urgently
need your help in testing it. I've tested EFS on a number of servers,
but I only have access to Unix machines for client testing. So I
especially need some reports from Windows users, connecting to both
Unix and Windows ftp servers. This is especially as some subtle but
possibly crucial aspects of the EFS<->client interactions have
changed.
I'm slowly working towards a testing suite, but it is not yet done and
the urgency of the XEmacs/Cygwin situation has prompted me to try to
release earlier.
Let me emphasize that, if I cannot get some testing done by the
community, the release will be significantly delayed, as we cannot
risk putting out a faulty EFS to the general user community, given its
current prominent role in the XEmacs package system.

Question on matching #ifdef with its #endif

Hi folks,
I use Viper on Xemacs. I was trying to extend the paren matching
capabality to match #ifdef with its #endif. But since I am new to
lisp, I am finding it hard to do it. I was wondering if any of you
guys have a lisp code which can match #if, #ifdef , #ifndef with its
corresponding #endif. ( basically matching preprocessor directives)

21.5.1, Solaris, and GNOME issues

I finally got around to trying (again) to build 21.5.1 with gtk and
gnome support on Solaris 2.7 with gcc 2.95.2. Configure runs fine
(see attached Installation file) and detects everything. The build
runs fine, and temacs is built. When temacs runs, I get an error from
ld.so that libgnomeui references gnome_help_display that exists in
libgnome. Sure enough ldd temacs shows no ref to libgnome.
As a hack, I removed the -z ignore option from the link command, and
the complaint goes away, and temacs builds a working xemacs. Hurray!
However, I have balloon-help enabled. Moving and leaving the mouse
over a toolbar button eventually causes xemacs to crash. I can
provide lisp and C backtraces if anyone is interested. It's 100%
repeatable for me. (BTW, this also happens on Linux.)

bogus interaction between blink-cursor-mode and the debugger

Hello all,
I finally got around to figuring out why I keep getting an error
whenever I invoke the xemacs debugger. To demonstrate the behavior,
evaluate the following in the scratch buffer of a fresh xemacs (-q):

(blink-cursor-mode)
(defun frobnicate ())
(debug-on-entry 'frobnicate)
(frobnicate))
After a brief pause, the error message `Wrong type argument:
number-char-or-marker-p, nil' will appear in the minibuffer.
The problem is that `blink-cursor-callback' no longer has access to
the global variable last-input-time (it is nil), so it runs into
problems when it tries compare it as a number. The patch below to
edit-utils/blink-cursor.el (as of xemacs-sumo-2001-04-08) appears to
fix the problem.
Could someone please apply it to the distribution?

Troubles with 31.4.3

Hi!
Sorry to disturb you and please write back directly to me as I am not
member of the list.
I have built yesterday 21.4.3 and could not use it and had to revert
to 21.1.12 XEmacs / GTK.
First, I have kernel 2.2.16, glibc 2.1.3, gtk etc 1.2.8 and gcc
2.95.2.
I have built it by just running configure --with-gtk=yes.
All went just fine without a single warning or similar, until I ran
it.
I am using GTK+ theme Mozilla-modern 21.1.12 has no problems with it.
On the other side, 21.4.3 is unusable, because :
- For any frame that is open a second one, very small is opened
thereafter. This second window is of the same width as the first one,
but one line long. It moves with a main window, which is not such a
problem. But, when I type focus switches very often to this small,
completely unusable window, which makes work impossible. Any attempt
of resizing or killing that small window results in it being blurred
after which first (normal) window becomes unusable
- Between menubar and text area there is one line (in every window)
that is completely unusable. Scrollbar extends not up to menubar but
up to that unusable area, which diminishes my working area
considerably.
- The above area complies fine with GTK+ theme background colour ,
which in my case is blue, while the working area is an intolerable
shining white.
- For each window that is open, XEmacs shoots this message to the
console (I have shortened it a bit) :
Gtk-critical gtkwidget.cc line 3718 ... assertion widget- != NULL failed
Please let me know how to solve the above problems.
I would like to upgrade to 21.4.3 because 21.1.12 has it's own set of
problems, but luckily quite tolerable.

compile problems with latest CVS

I had to apply the attached patch to get the latest version of the mainline
(21.5) compiling with native Win32 and cygwin. "dumper.c" uses
wrap_record_1(), but "src/lrecord.h" doesn't define this if error checking
is off. This patch is just to get things compiling (and, so far running)
again: the version of wrap_record_1() defined when error checking takes two
arguments; mine takes only one.
