XEmacs 21.2.47 "Zephir" is released 23 years

XEmacs 21.2.47 "Zephir" is released. The CVS tag for the release is r21-2-47 (or the "moving tag" r21-2-latest-beta). Tarballs are available in the usual place ftp://ftp.xemacs.org/pub/xemacs/beta/xemacs-21.2. There are no PGP signatures for this release. 21.2.47 "Zephir" contains a few changes to 21.2.46 "Urania". See the individual ChangeLogs for details. However, its primary purpose is practice for me in creating a distribution, uploading it, and announcing it, preparatory to the release of 21.4.0. If you have time, I would appreciate it if a few people would verify that the tarballs can be downloaded, the CVS tags can be used for checkout, and that the resulting source trees can be built. There will be another pre-release April 15 Japan time, containing a few last-minute patches and the release documentation omitted from this prerelease, followed by the release of 21.4.0 late on the 15th UTC. Important notice for CVS users: The CVS Repository structure has been rationalized thanks to Michael Sperber. The development code is now on the trunk. There are several active branches, each with per-release tags of the form "r21-1-14" (major-minor-patchlevel), and a branch tag which always gives the tip: Branch Branch tag Release tag Development branch (new, 21.5): none (on trunk) r21-5-xx "Gamma" prerelease (old 21.2, now 21.4): release-21-4 r21-2-xx "Stable" release (21.1): release-21-1 r21-1-xx Note that the "gamma" code has branched off from the trunk as "release-21-4," but the individual tags for its prereleases are "r21-2-xx." To update an existing CVS checkout to the trunk (development), use the -A flag to cvs update, or simply checkout with no -r flag. Re: trouble doing "make bindist" for packages 23 years

I've narrowed the culprit down to the patch at the end of this message. At least in my situation, and it happens both here at home and at work, trying to do a "make bindist" will quite often fail. This happens when I've run it once, and have package-info files in the package tree. I believe what happens is that the package source dirs are at the beginning of load-path, and xemacs tries to load the package-info file in the current directory instead of the package-info.el or .elc that is in my installed xemacs lisp directory. Looking through the mailing list archive I see at least one other person with the same problem you basically end up with an error like this: Symbol's function definition is void: xemacs-base xemacs exiting . gmake[2]: *** [package-info] Error 255 gmake[2]: Leaving directory `/usr/local/users/support/nk/cvs/xemacs-packages/libs/xemacs-base' gmake[1]: *** [xemacs-base/bindist.target] Error 2 gmake[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/local/users/support/nk/cvs/xemacs-packages/libs' gmake: *** [libs/bindist.target] Error 2 I'm really surprised more people aren't getting messed up by this. fill-paragraph-or-region annoyance while in Emacs Lisp mode 23 years

Hi, I am becoming really annoyed by the behavior of fill-paragraph-or-region while I edit Emacs Lisp files. In GNU Emacs each time I use M-q to format a documentation string of a defun, the comment gets formated properly. In XEmacs the whole function seems to be formatted, instead of only the comment. This is really annoying as to get it working correctly I need to enter empty lines before and after the comment, fill the region and then remove the empty lines. Anybody else seeing this? I am using XEmacs 21.1.14/Linux with the latest released packages. Regards, Ovidiu

So I think I did it. - The trunk of the XEmacs module now contains the current development code taken off the release-21-2 branch. It presumably will turn into the 21.5 series soon. - For your updating pleasure, the following branches are now available: * release-21-1 is Vin Shelton's branch for future releases in the 21.1 series. * release-21-4 is Stephen Turnbull's branch for future releases in the 21.4 releases. I've named the branchpoints release-21-1-bp and release-21-4-bp. This was prior to the current discussion, and there's no political motivation behind not naming them differently. Their names are trivial to change via cvs rtag. These are your branches, Vin and Stephen: feel free to do so; if anyone gets pissed about this, it won't be me. If you have a current checkout along the release-21-2 series, and you want to stay current, I recommend you do the following: - Back up your local checkout. - Do a regular "cvs update". - Do "cvs update -A" which will reset the release-21-2 sticky tag. At least for me, it did preserve my local changes. IMPORTANT NOTES: - The only person who checks into release-21-1 should be Vin. - The only person who checks into release-21-4 should be Stephen. - The release-21-2 branch is now deprecated (especially now that a 21.2 release will never happen). Don't commit to it. Your changes will effectively be lost. - I had originally planned to be finished by this afternoon, 4PM UTC. Since it's somewhat earlier than that, I suggest some of the folks who read this try out updating from the new setup, and send me private email about their experience. You might be using a Mule-compiled XEmacs with some bug that garbles the JAR binary. I don't know anything about archiv-mode, so I unfortunately don't have a clue about how to debug it. Perhaps you should contact the author, which appears to be Morten Welinder (terra(a)diku.dk)? Or, maybe you should try running/porting the FSF version of archive-mode and see if it works for you? If it helps, I use XEmacs 21.2 (a pre-release of the soon-to-be-released 21.4), compiled with Mule. "Works for me."
