5) Re-start XEmacs.

Golden rule of configure: Never specify any options that should be
default [Because specifying them on the command line forces them on,
hiding any problem.

You want --with-sound=none,native to get just native sound.

Your not the only one that is confused by it. The idea was to be
able to disable a certain feature and still have the others auto-detected,
without introducing a plethora of --with-sound-blabla options and
still allowing for as much backward compatibility as possible, in
particular with --with-sound=none
Better solutions are welcome..

The documentation is wrong.
XEmacs in fact puts those libraries in archlibdir relative to
datadir (the idea being that since the architecture prefix is there,
it can safely be shared).
There where a lot of changes to this area during the 21.2 cycle, maybe
this one should be revisited. Is having those files there causing you
any problems?

I compile XEmacs on potato all the time, so it should at least have
worked, even if not installed where you expected it.

However it seems to me that from simply comparing the two branches of
the #ifdef that adding '+1' in the #else as well would make sense.

issue with FTP Clients that use readline support (NcFTP).
What is a simple FTP client that I can use with XEmacs/efs?

tried compiling 21.4.1 at work today.
a) on my solaris 2.5.1 system with gcc 2.7.2.2 (yeah, i know, it's
ancient), configure fails because -Wsign-compare doesn't exist as a
compiler option.
removed that from configure.in and rerunning autoconf, i can then
build, install, and run fine.
b) when I compiled it on WinNT, it gets installed into xemacs-21.4.b1. and
when run, it proclaims itself as 21.4 (beta)1
Is that really the case?

New CVS branch for Windows/Mule

I have committed my Windows/Mule related changes into the new CVS
branch named "mule-21-5".
Ben has another almost workable code that is based on general redesign
and he plan to merge it into that branch. We will work with it and
merge it into the trunk. Anybody who is interested in it, please test
and comment it.

beginning (I mean I've never before compiled it myself, just used
packages from various distributions). I've always used non-mule
xemacsen with horrible hacks applied to support cyrillic input. This
time I'm trying MULE (also using xkb).
First, I've read through "Mule" chapter and found the following

think that it is "list-coding-systems" needs to be fixed to remove
those variants. (It would also obviously be logical if various line
endings be specified with separate orthogonal trigger, which could be
used e.g. without MULE at all).
Third, XEmacs does not honour my X resources (older XEmacs does,
surely). I have:

(don't look at "koi8_1", it has nothing to do with encoding, just
trailing "-koi8-r" matters). XEmacs complains:

default, charset cyrillic-iso8859-5"
If that is because I do not have fonts in "iso8859-5", then I think
that it's not so good and it'd be better to just use user-supplied
ordinary koi8-r encoded fonts. Thus, if I'm trying to write something
in Russian, I get only "~~~~~~". Nonetheless, everything else is ok,
for if I'll save the file, it contains the blindly typed words in correct
Russian encoding.
If the mapping between charsets and fonts with MULE is specified
somewhere, then please point me there -- I haven't found anything
(though looked not so carefully -- will do).

1. curses don't work, so I have to use vim on the console. Great.
2. GTK support is totally borked. Here are some examples (21.5 out of

I very ambivalent about this change. It does make us compatible with
FSF but I am not all sure us changing API all the time is so much
better because I also agree with Hrvoje's reservations.

I agree no-conversion is a crap name, however it is consistent in that
coding systems name are actually
<character-conversion>-<eol convention>
pairs and "no-conversion" simply means "no character set conversion".
One wonders whether we should actually drop no-conversion altogether
if this is a problem.

P.S. It isn't helping that all the FSF docs prefer "no-conversion"
over "binary".
