I think the Right Thing would be to have a genpage macro (a Perl
subroutine) that would generate an appropriate <IMG> tag. Something
like
relImg( 'xemacs.gif' , 'alt="XEmacs"' )
to generate
<IMG SRC="../../Images/xemacs.gif" alt="XEmacs">
This makes it explicit that Magic is happening, and keeps the Perl
stuff out of the HTML stuff, which I think is the way to go for sake
of clarity.
It's trivial to do an ugly version of this (the example above is
ugly); a good version would need to integrate some Perl modules so as
to be able to automatically insert the proper 'height' and 'width'
tags.

Not according to any HTML spec I've ever seen. If you can provide a
citation for that, I'd be pleased to see it. It _is_ a way to provide
a base for all relative links, but there's nothing about it being
specific for email, AFAIK. Like I said, I'd _really_ appreciate
knowing the source of this information.

Calling it an error is an error, IMNSHO. The reason for the broken links
in the Architecting section is because those documents were prepared

The reason for using <BASE> is so image links in the template will
work at all relative directory levels of the site. Consider what would
happen with the <IMG SRC="Images/xemacs.gif"> when viewing
<URL:http://www.xemacs.org/About/index.html> if that BASE tag wasn't there.
Yes, there are other solutions possible. They all felt kludge-y to me;
while using the <BASE> tag felt relatively clean.

I was the one who changed from
insert-file-contents-internal
to
insert-file-contents-literally
because the former caused problems when installing packages built by
Windows NT native XEmacs.
AFAIK, reverting to insert-file-contents-internal would be wrong.
Jan and Michael had this figured out. There were patches to core lisp
and efs to make this work.
Jan, Michael, could you please comment?

Sorry to be insisting here, but this has nothing to do with efs. This
is entirely due to a bug in package-get.el.
insert-file-contents-literally will not download files with efs (as it
sets file-name-handler-alist to nil - notice the d:\ in your error
message).
The error message "ftp-error FTP Error: CWD 550
/pub/xemacs/packages/package-index.LATEST.pgp/: Not a directory" on
the other hand seems to be due to some bug in efs - but they are not
related.

After some debugging it seems clear what the problem is (at least on
my system; as not many other people have this problems I may be
missing something in the big picture). The
insert-file-contents-literally function makes sure nothing much
happens when a file is loaded, in particular it clears the
`file-name-handler-alist' - which as far as I can see is *the* thing
that handles efs file names (it contains 3 efs-*-handler-function
entries). Clearing this (if I understand correctly) results in XEmacs
trying to open a filename like
"/anonymous＠ftp.xemacs.org:/pub/xemacs/packages/package-index.LATEST.pgp"
as if it were a local file name (w/out using efs) - which fails. So it
looks to me that Dan Holmsand's patch is doing the right thing. Or the
insert-file-contents-literally should leave `file-name-handler-alist'
alone. What is the expert opinion on this? Thanks.
(I'm using XEmacs 21.2.34/35 cygwin under w2k).

I got a crash of (emacs-version)

after pressing g in *Group* buffer today.
Unfortunately I don't have compiled it with debug information.

I think I had just pressed "g" in a Gnus summary buffer to get new
mail and news. It crashed.
C backtrace appended. The Lisp backtrace is in memory
somewhere, waiting to be flushed out....
Doesn't look good crashing in GC. Perhaps some forgotten GCPRO?
