I can use -debug-init now, and here is the backtrace I get upon startup, just `./xemacs -debug-init': Singaling: (wring-type-argument stringp, nil) substitute-in-file-name(nil) load(nil t t t) load-user-init-file() load-init-file() command-line() normal-top-level() I'll try to look into that, but not immediately. What happens if you do xemacs -vanilla M-x ediff-toggle-use-toolbar RET M-x ediff-files RET <foo> RET <bar> RET and then push the magic "Toggle split mode between side-to-side and one-on-top-of-another" button? This is all I have to do to make the contol panel's toolbar buttons disappear. This bug report will be sent to the XEmacs Development Team, not to your local site managers!! Please write in English, because the XEmacs maintainers do not have translators to read other languages for them. In XEmacs 21.2 (beta29) "Hestia" [Lucid] (i686-pc-cygwin) of Fri Feb 25 2000 on ANDRE configured using `configure --debug=no --error-checking=none --use_assertions=no' Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug and the precise symptoms of the bug: Efs/ftp was working with 21.2.28, under Cygwin using ftp.exe from inetutils. When I upgraded to 21.2.29, efs/ftp blocks when trying to open a connection. What's odd is that all other subprocess kinds of stuff works (compilation, vc, etc). Btw, 21.2.29 appears to be more stable than 21.2.28 under Cygwin. Thanks. -andre. -vanilla and 'Load .emacs' button bug 24 years, 1 month

xemacs -vanilla provides a nice button 'Load .emacs' in menubar, but it seems to me that there is a bug. Suppose you start xemacs -vanilla, then open several buffers with different major modes. In each buffer the menubar contains 'Load .emacs'. Fine. But: pressing this button in a buffer with one major mode does still keep it in buffers with other major modes. And those buttons load .emacs again and again. For test, I loaded at startup the following code: (set-buffer (get-buffer-create "Text")) (text-mode) (set-buffer (get-buffer-create "C")) (c-mode) (set-buffer (get-buffer-create "Tmp")) (text-mode) So, after startup there are 3 major modes: text-mode, c-mode and lisp-interaction. I added counter to my .emacs. I pressed the button in text-mode buffer and it disappears. Then i pressed it in c-mode buffer and *scratch*. Each time I pressed buttons my counter of .emacs loads incremented. I suppose that 'Load .emacs' should be active only once. May be I'm wrong. Nick.

What you're suggesting (and what I see has been implemented) reverses the xemacs.org/www.xemacs.org roles. This is problematic because redirects are saying the site name is www.xemacs.org. Hmm, there's another problem: the forward and reverse DNS do not match for xemacs.org [207.96.122.8]. This could confuse search engines and stuff that build indices. Here's what really should happen: o www.xemacs.org should be a CNAME for gwyn.tux.org o xemacs.org should be a CNAME for gwyn.tux.org o Apache's httpd.conf should have a VirtualHost directive for www.xemacs.org that has the actual XEmacs site o Apache's httpd.conf should have a VirtualHost directive that will take any requested URL and rewrite it for www.xemacs.org with a permanent redirect. This way, no matter how someone gets to the site, all of the Right Stuff will happen to make sure that the Right URL is displayed with each document. So when someone adds a bookmark, it'll be for the right thing. When a search engine adds an entry, it will be for the right URL. Duplicates are infinitely annoying. And there won't be any of the badness of having DNS in a weird state with forward lying and reverse and forward not agreeing. (Sorry for taking so long to reply.
