[Patch] for compiler warnings in 21.2b13 from CVS 24 years, 12 months

Hi, the latest version of 21.2 from CVS generates huge numbers of warnings under egcs-1.0.3, because the initialiser for the lrecord_header member of Lisp_Subr in lisp.h and of I_hate_C in symeval.h is wrong. Errors displaying ethiopic geminiation character 24 years, 12 months

Using 21.2 beta 13 "Demeter" to display the file `ethio-util.el', I see the following glitches on display of the gemination modifier (like an umlaut). There are three instances of the gemination mark in the last 14 lines of the attached function from the original file. >From a position where these gemination marks are displaying correctly, moving the first gemination character to the top line by repeatedly clicking the down arrow of the slidebar results in the bleeding of the gemination mark as in the first png. Moving the text down the display, one line at a time, will leave a tail on a number of successive lines, and then clean the tail up, until you reach a point some way down the display (about ten or twelve lines down the display, when the tails stabilise, and subsequent downward movement does not alter the tails, leaving them as in the second png. -- __ /__ Peter B. XEmacs 21.2.13 via CVS - build horrors on AIX 4.3.2 24 years, 12 months

Well.. I haven't even gotten configure to run right yet. Issues: 1) WHen testing for sin(), the code uses (basically) this: char sin(); int main() { sin(); } Compiling this with '-g' or '-O3' works - you need a -lm to link. *however*, 'xlc -O3 -qlibansi' tells the compiler that it *knows* about ANSI-specified side effects for ANSI functions, and to optimize accordingly. Well - sin() doesn't have side effects, and we don't look at errno, and we don't assing the return value anyplace. Therefor, it's safe to optimize out. This ends up convincing 'configure' that we don't need a -lm - so then other stuff in -lm isn't found. I seem to remeber some other bad juju involving massive inlining and discarding of code when I tried -O4 once - it blew the 'checking for main in Xbsd|gdi32' tests because it optimized away the entire world. 2) "char pow(); int main() { pow();}" blows the compiler up if using 'xlc -O3 -qlibansi'. (sqrt() and probably a few others do it as well - unclear why sin() and fmod() don't do this. Now, all of this could be bypassed by simply not giving -qlibansi - but it *does* allow a bunch more optimizaions, and only seems to cause problems in Configure when we misprototype or use dead code. ;) Could the template code be changed to something like: char doodah(); int main() { return (int) doodah();} This would prevent it from over-optimizing and at least fix issue (1). Issue 2 is, of course, a compiler bug pure and simple, and needs to be fixed by IBM. Off to bed, and hopefully it will go better in the morning. ;) /Valdis

Hi Adrian, Success! Yes, I've been able to build a brand new xemacs, although I had to fiddle a bit, because I used the latest sources that put away with the Installation.el file. Try the following patch: A bit off-topic: I still have to copy temacs.exe from src to nt and xemacs.exe from nt to src to get the install done. I thought, there has been applied a patch wrt this?
