gnus 5.6.45 (xemacs package gnus-1.37): Bug if no XPM support 25 years, 2 months

Building xemacs with './configure --with-xpm=no' causes gnus to fail to load (see backtrace below for an example). It seems to me that the problem exists only in faces.el. Or, are you saying the semantics of make-face-bold, etc. are not clearly enough defined? Is this where FSF-compatibilities comes in?

[possibly 21.0] Make global-faces overridable by resoureces 25 years, 2 months

This patch makes the code in face-spec-set actually work like it was supposed to. It makes the interaction between resources and custom for the default face to be the same as for the other fonts. Properties of the font not touched by custom now take the value specified by the resource if there was one. From the bug reports on xemacs-beta this seems to the behaviour expected by a lot of testers [Setting the font using the menu no longer changes the colors of the face for instance]. The big open questions are now: Is this is indeed the right semantics for custom settings (note that it already was this way for all faces except the default font)? What is the behaviour of Emacs 20.3? I cannot test what it does. I just learned that if you use the handy dandy C-M-x while you code, the darn thing might not byte compile or load in a fresh XEmacs. Duh... live and learn. Toss it or fix it yourself... and I'll send another after I get some sleep and fix my own copy. Sorry folks. Hey, I bet you've done it to. So there. :-)

Down at the bottom, there's a defadvice; I somehow left a line in I thought I'd deleted. Blap it out and replace with this: (defadvice write-file (before After-save activate) (if (After-save--ascmd-property) (setq modeline-process nil))) ... shouldn't be much more work than applying a patch. I can vouch that this patch also solves the crash I was experiencing on my laptop with the 24bpp display. I can now run a customize buffer with no trouble, and the penguin is just as cute as ever now that he's not striped like a jail suit.
