I've noticed that the XEmacs FAQ isn't terribly up to date. I sent mail a few days ago to xemacs-faq(a)xemacs.org and received no reply. I'm hereby volunteering my time towards fixing up the FAQ if my services are desired. My qualifications are as follows: * I've been a user of Emacs or XEmacs since 1988. * I know Texinfo, TeX, HTML and don't freak when I see a Postscript file. * I supervised a help desk for a large user system developing many form letters and other forms of documentation, so I'm familiar with writing FAQ documents for both experienced and new users. * I've served as webmaster for large sites. * I'm proficient in various shell languages, program in Perl, and can follow LISP and C code. * I understand release engineering; I use tools like patch and CVS daily. * I'm a native speaker of English, I'm studying Japanese in school, and I've previously studied Spanish and Russian. I like playing with multilingualization features. * I believe in Free Software. and best of all, * I'm silly enough to volunteer. Copying the entire CVS repository 24 years, 4 months

I used rsync for the first time today. A nice program. I copied the XEmacs CVS repository rsync --rsh=ssh -a -v -v --rsync-path=bin/rsync cvs.xemacs.org:/usr/CVSroot/. CVSroot ... wrote 194832 bytes read 262971722 bytes 80812.70 bytes/sec total size is 262218477 speedup is 1.00 make 329.40s user 47.65s system 11% cpu 54:16.15 total Then I did it again: ... wrote 8712 bytes read 254629 bytes 2646.64 bytes/sec total size is 262218938 speedup is 995.74 make 2.51s user 3.38s system 5% cpu 1:39.95 total Then with no verbosity: make 2.03s user 2.11s system 15% cpu 26.632 total So it is quite reasonable to mirror the XEmacs CVS repository via this protocol to other mirror sites. Commits will continue to have to be done to the one true master repository, even if we mirror.

The problem seems to be that when a new window is created XEmacs calls gutter_specs_changed and this calls calculate_gutter_size which instantiates a widget (why?) and these never get freed. Jan

Interesting CVS size stats 24 years, 4 months

Some people were interested in how much space is taken up by our CVS workspace, especially those who might be interested in CVSuping or rsyncing it. The size of a freshly `cvs checkout'ed workspace is 35 MB. Here's the big picture regarding the sizes of things in our CVS repository. Darryl, The patch certainly changes things. I can write the file now and preserve the '0xD'. Trouble is, when I hexl-find-file, that `0xD' is converted into a `0xA'. The underlying file is still OK. This whether or not I use -vanilla. When I do, the file comes up in `Raw' mode, but still does the switch on input. When I don't my default-major-mode, which is text-mode, seems to determine that the coding will be ISO8. The rest of the situation pertains: when I hexl-find-file the `0xD' becomes `0xA', but when I write, things are OK. I spoke too soon. When I describe the coding systems, I get this: Coding system for saving this buffer: ISO8:t -- iso-2022-8-mac Default coding system (for new files): ISO8 -- iso-2022-8 No no no, it's not true! With -vanilla, the story is similar: Coding system for saving this buffer: Raw:t -- raw-text-mac Default coding system (for new files): ISO8 -- iso-2022-8 Jan asked for a recipe, and I just realized that I am now one step removed from my original problem.
