I put breakpoints on TabsResize and TabsExpose. After hitting the 6th
breakpoint, the infinite loop seems to start.
I have code in my .emacs that turns off tabs that may be being run.

Er, no. The NAS I have does not block /dev/dsp, but that's a Debian
patch to the thing.
Esound actually accepts many client streams at once and mixes them. That
is, I am currently playing MP3 audio and I still get the sound files
played by XEmacs. At the same time.
It also comes with a LD_PRLOAD library that maps open("/dev/dsp") into
an Esound connection, with all the mixing and stuff. That lets old
software work at the same time :)
ESD actually holds /dev/dsp open while running though, just like the
non-patched NAS....

libesd is probably calling alarm so setup a timeout. From the look of
it esd_play_file should be wrapped in calls to
stop/start_async_timeouts.
However I am not sure whether is not indicative of a larger problem.
Potentially every library call could use SIGALRM internally.

Anything is possible, but it would be interesting to know why your
system was tweaked. I don't have source to the local X environment on
hand, so I can't readily check.

I picked up that patch and applied it (by hand; for some perverse
reason I can't explain, patch(1) claimed every single hunk "FAILED",
so I did it myself the old-fashioned way) and have recompiled. It's
been a couple hours now, with gdb lying in wait for its prey, and no
exit forthcoming. Looks promising.
If this patch isn't in CVS yet, it probably ought to be.

I have been having these all weekend. redhat 6.1,
21.2.pretty_recent_cvs, with just athena configured.
i was doing a save in vm at the time.
i lost the lisp backtrace but perhaps this is of use. Let me know if
these look usable, and i will keep sending them in..... at least with

Note that everybody and his dog has his own sound deamon.

The E sound deamon itself has has one essential implementation
advantage over NAS. If it is not used it doesn't block the sound
device. This makes it coexist a lot better with old style
open("/dev/dsp") programs on Linux and thus makes it possible to
enable it by default without annoying users.

Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug
and the precise symptoms of the bug:
I was editing few java files.In dired mode the buffer names are shown
as tabs on the top of the window. I switched from one buffer to
another by clicking on the tab. Xemacs dumps core. Error message and
Stack trace is as follows:

*MAKE SURE* to include the information in the command

To do this, locate the core file that was produced as a result
of this crash (it's usually called `core' and is located in the
directory in which you started the editor, or maybe in your home
directory), and type

Well, it's big claim to fame over NAS is, so far as I can see, that it
has current development support all over the place.
That and the fact that Esd supports software mixing of different audio
streams[1] simultaneously, such that XEmacs and my MP3 player can both
produce sound at the same time through it.
If I am not mistaken (and the documentation indicates that I am not),
this is not a feature of the NAS server I have here...

Well, Esd isn't close to the standard of NAS, technically. Software
mixing and software support are pretty good points though...
