I just installed w3-4.0pre.46
I'm using glibc 2.0 under linux

Please include less subtle info about your platform next time :-)
I think wmperry had a similar problem recently. on some Solaris 2.6
versions the dldump library doesn't work that well...
I think the work around would be to change .../src/s/sol2.h from

Problem with cvs?

I have just done a cvs update of both XEmacs and the packages for the
first time since the end of June. Both seemed to go extremely slowly,
but, after a few restarts, the packages update did complete. XEmacs
proper, however, stalled during the update of the man directory. I
tried blowing a few of the .tex files away to see if that would break
the log jam (it seemed a good idea at the time) but to no avail. The
update stalls here:

Using a 21.2 build from last June, I tried to edit a file with hexl. My
changes to x0D were stubbornly modified to x0A whenever I wrote the
file. I set the coding to binary, but the D->A changes just kept on
happening. Am I missing something, or was this a bug in an earlier
version?

I saw the same behavior on a FAT drive that I did on my NTFS drive.
But yes, always assume UTC, that way you'll always get the ordering correct
at the exspense of possibly an incorrect localtime() display.
