I downloaded and did a vanilla install of 21.0-b50 (I had 21.0-b46
previously installed). I wanted to go and update all out-of-date
packages and the recipe that worked for me last time was:

I'm back with a few more observations/comments about my transition
from 20.4 to 21.0. Here goes:
1. mic-paren no longer activates itself on load. This is fine except
there is no documentation for this in the NEWS file. Are there any
other modes that no longer auto-activate themselves?
2. customize-changed-options claims that: "No user options have changed
defaults in recent Emacs versions" no matter what old version of
XEmacs is specified.
3. font-lock-fontify-buffer acts very differently on a color TTY in 21.0
than it did in 20.4. In a tty, run the following for both 20.4 and 21.0:
xemacs -vanilla some-lisp-file
M-x font-lock-fontify-buffer
The highlighting will be very different between 20.4 and 21.0: in
20.4, comments were in red, strings were in green, function names were
in blue. In 21.0, the only fontification I observe is that keywords
are in cyan. Upon further investigation, this seems to be caused by
forms of the following type in font-lock.el:

No, but it should not be too hard to make such a function. Do we want

package-get-update-all is still broken. I had sent a patch to fix
this, it was accepted, but it is not in the code. It is in the
changelog. My guess is that another patch clobbered it by accident?
I will be sending a new patch for this shortly.

For purposes of the ChangeLog, credits entries in about.el are

The attempt to build on DU 4.0 files immediately on
configuration. The system type was returned as "alphaev56-dec-osf4.0c"
which is very different in that the exact processor type is in the
name (alphaev56). This is nice as it allows the use of chip version
specific optimizations for the compiler.

Invalid configuration `alphaev56-dec-osf4.0c': machine `alphaev56-dec' not recognized
Unfortunately, while config.guess has been modified for this,
configure has not been modified to accept this. Did a patch get lost
here?
I was able to configure and build with "configure alpha-dec-osf4.0c",
but the configuration really needs to be fixed. (Success report will
follow if it builds OK.)

Given that specifications of the form you were trying are working for
me for some faces, I assume the new behavior is a bug. I was able to
reproduce your particular example not working though.

Yes, I agree with you. As far as the Xt Intrinsics are concerned
Emacs*font-lock-comment-face.attributeForeground: turquoise4
Emacs*EmacsFrame.font-lock-comment-face.attributeForeground: turquoise4
should be identical with the only difference being the second one
being slightly more specific. Given the uniqueness of the last two
names I find it hard to believe there is a problem. Remember, it's
better not to force the widget hierarchy on the user as that makes it
impossible to change in the future.

All right. Following Ben and Kyle's suggestions, here's a new
patch. Instead of implementing a new face property, I've just implemented an
X11 version of the dim property (BTW, this property doesn't seem to work on my
ttys ?).
I'll leave the windows port to someone who knows this platform.
