missing menu entries for ediff et al. 25 years, 9 months

I just noticed that the menu entries for ediff and vc vanished somewhere during the last couple of month. Is this intentional? Is manually loading the *-hooks the preferred way to go, now? If that is the case, I think this should be documented in NEWS. possible redisplay bug 25 years, 9 months

I'm not sure whether this is a known bug (or feature) in Benadir. Start xemacs -vanilla, enter the following into the *scratch* buffer and evaluate with C-j. The lower part of the frame is not redrawn correctly and stays red. This happens for example when exiting xmine. Other packaging issues I've been slapped in the face with 25 years, 9 months

1. My decision to base primary package searching off of $prefix appears to be have a suboptimal one, but probably too late to fix for 21.0. It won't matter in many cases, but in the cases that will matter it will really suck. I welcome suggestions as to how this can be improved. I am now of the opinion that there should be more non-compiled-in options available (for packages to search at run-time). 2. I'm going to pull the dumped-lisp.el files from Sun and tooltalk.[1] If Sun wishes their non-XEmacs standards supported by us, they can pay for it like they have done in the past.[2] The equivalent functionality can be pulled into something loaded at run-time if executed on a Sun if someone is sufficiently ambitious. At the current time I can make test builds on Suns of various configurations, but I cannot run them in X11. Footnotes: [1] Michael, when is the next update of EFS scheduled? EFS is the last XEmacs package with a dumped-lisp.el file. Can you get it in prior to 21.0? Pretty please? [2] Yeah, I've got an axe to grind.

Futures and some Packaging issues I've been working on 25 years, 9 months

In the last couple of days I've been working on: 1. (Re)Building Lisp packages from scratch. Building non-Mule Lisp packages will be supported in the next package update. This is tested and working. 2. A procedure for building both a new XEmacs and new Lisp packages checked out from source from cvs.xemacs.org. This is tough, and probably won't be supported until after 21.0 release, and only on Unix with a heavy installation of GNU tools until someone gets around to porting it to Cygwin. The more I think about it, the less I like anything extra(==external) dumped with XEmacs, Hrvoje's objections notwithstanding. Can we merge the mule-base package back into the core without too much bitching if there is a way to jettison it if XEmacs/Mule isn't desired and it is distributed as xemacs-mule-XX.X-bYY-mule.tar.gz?
