I'm not using any optimization other than XEmacs' default Makefile
settings.
After playing a but and doing some research, I found the following:
1) vc.el needed a patch, as documented in a posting that I found on
google from quite a few years ago.
2) The issue with grep and compile was caused by the newer version of
cc-mode. I reinstalled the earlier package and all is well.
