After several years of not updating my XEmacs from 21.4.17, I built and
installed 21.4.22 and upgraded all my packages. Whoa is me!
I have several problems:
1) If I grep for something I get the following:
Error in process sentinel: (wrong-type-argument stringp nil)
2) If I execute vc-print-log I get the following:
Error in process sentinel: (error Marker does not point anywhere)
3) If do a compiler, at the end of the compiler I get the following:
Error in process sentinel: (wrong-type-argument stringp nil)
What's going on here? Have things broken so badly?
I built XEmacs on SPARC Solaris-10 with the GCC 7.7.0 compiler.

First I've heard of any of the above. But I suspect at this point
only a very few developers are using 21.4, so maybe we've just missed
it. (I have seen "(wrong type argument: stringp nil)" before, but not
in process sentinels.) It could also be Solaris-specific.
I built XEmacs on SPARC Solaris-10 with the GCC 7.7.0 compiler.
I've heard very bad things about GCC 4.7. I can only imagine that 7.7
is far worse. :-)
Seriously, if you're using a bleeding edge GCC you might want to try
backing off to GCC 4.5 or so. Recent compilers tend to be quite
strict in their interpretation of ISO rules, especially if you have
optimization cranked up. Are you getting any warnings (especially
about aliasing)?

I'm not using any optimization other than XEmacs' default Makefile
settings.
After playing a but and doing some research, I found the following:
1) vc.el needed a patch, as documented in a posting that I found on
google from quite a few years ago.
2) The issue with grep and compile was caused by the newer version of
cc-mode. I reinstalled the earlier package and all is well.

Let me see if I can reproduce the vc.el and CC mode issues. vc we can
just apply the patch, I guess, but for CC I'm sure Alan will be
interested. If I can't reproduce, can I ask you to make a report to
