Ah, I see. Life gets so complicated sometimes...
Thanks for the insight. And I see it is also a lot of extra, unnecessary
work to add recode FSF Emacs with the equivalent feature set in a clean room
environment, assuming one could find people who have enough interest to do
the work but have not already seen the XEmacs code.
Of course, the RMS' determination and reluctance to compromise may be
frustrating to many people at different times, but it is also a primary
virtue that has helped open source and free software to be as successful as
it is. George Bernard Shaw had a quote about activists in a cause, which I
don't recall well enough to quote, but is applicable here. He was talking
about suffragettes.
So y'all are caught in the middle between intransigence (RMS, at least as
perceived by this group) and apathy (on Sun's part). suspect that this is
so low on the Sun radar that there's nobody around to make a decision.
However, I was just at the Open Source conference, where Sun formally GPL'd
StarOffice and announce
OpenOffice.org. Perhaps a note to what's his name
who built StarDivision and now runs the group at Sun's that is responsible
for these might have an effect. Now might be a good time to talk to Sun - if
anyone really cares about this issue, of course.
Then again, the XEmacs group may not be all that fond of the idea of working
directly on a merged tree with RMS, due purely to political/social factors.

No. All accommodation must come from the FSF side, or from third
parties. RMS's objection is to the fact that some XEmacs copyrights
are controlled by something other than the FSF. Most (but not all)
current XEmacs developers have assigned their copyrights to the FSF.
However, much of XEmacs is copyrighted by Sun Microsystems Inc, which
no longer seems to have much direct interest in XEmacs, but which sees
no point in assigning its copyright in XEmacs to the FSF.
"The XEmacs gang" does not own those copyrights, and therefore is
powerless. It is between Sun and the Emacs maintainers; either Sun
assigns, RMS relents, or the status quo continues.
