On the contrary, XDrawString uses the text (rendered accordingto the GC) as an additional mask. XDrawStringImage vs. XDrawString 25 years, 1 month

What is the difference in these calls? While porting the X redisplay to gtk I have ended up reading large amounts of the gdk source, and there is no way to get it to call XDrawStringImage... gdk_draw_text() always calls XDrawString. I couldn't find any specific references to differences in behaviour in the man pages, and I don't have my copies of the o'reilly X books any more. :( Ben? -Bill P.

The following patch, applied to mail/mh-comp.el (emacs) mh-e/mh-comp.el (xemacs) Makes it easier for odd sites (like ours) to have a working mh-e installation. Yes, it is. I could not get its menus to work... Hope that's fixed with the move to `guile-gtk' they mention. I'm glad my mail about it wasn't wasted; I told someone about something they'd not heard of yet. :-) Hope the redisplay redesigners / recoders find the TeX font stuff doable... I have no way of knowing whether that's anything more than a "pipe dream".

problem building current repository version 25 years, 1 month

The TeX CM fonts are available as Postscript Type 1, so all you need is an X server with Type 1 support (just about all recent X11 versions, I think). Ray

hrm... interface to system/native dialog boxes? 25 years, 1 month

What do people think the best way to allow access to built-in dialogs like file dialogs, font-selection, etc, etc, should work? I don't like the idea of just writing one using the new gtk/glyph support. This would be an interface onto GetOpenFileName() / GtkFileSelection. Should popup-dialog-box be extended, or does a new function need to be written? You could extend the syntax that popup-dialog-box expects by substituting a symbol as the first item in the list (as opposed to a string). The rest of the list would be a property list modifying the default behaviour of the system dialog (is the file for opening or saving? font choice restrions? blah blah blah). -Bill P.
