Hi,
Here comes yet another status report from the project of converting to
GPLv3 or later.
There are two lists of files below. The first list contains all files
that are in an undecided state. Please inspect: Do we need to do anything
with them. If so what?
The second list contains all files that we can leave untouched and the
reason for that. Please inspect: Are all reasons OK and correct?
Are we getting close to the were an inspection of the xemacs-gplv3
repository could be performed? With the intent that it that is OK we
could merge back to trunk and go GPLv3 or later?

[Bug: 21.5-b32] Crash in display-message-or-buffer

Dear Bug Team!
I found this problem using git mode when adding a new directory (which
isn't supported in git.el). I can reproduce the crash using the
following steps with xemacs -vanilla:
(load "emacs-simple")
C-x b *foo*
<insert a couple of lines of text into *foo*>
M-: (display-message-or-buffer (get-buffer "*foo*"))
This causes a crash in count-screen-lines on line 42 of the file.

compiling the beta on an iMac

Having been away a while, I'm assured I can share my problems
with trying to build the latest xemacs beta here.
I used to do this sort of thing all the time, but it's been at
least five or six years, and although I have a good software
background, I'm not primarily a programmer. (About 20 years of
system testing an another five of Web application development
using LAMP in my background.)
Also, version 21.4 patch 22 is working fine for my purposes.
That said: Help!
My system is a three-week-old 27-inch iMac with quad core Intel
processor ＠ 3.2 GHz and other goodies irrelevant to this
discussion. I'm told there are other Mac users among us who are
using the beta and that it's working superbly well for them.
So then , I unwound the source, did the usual sequence of stuff,
and got an error. What follows is the edited shell buffer output,
with most irrelevant stuff deleted.

Apparently I'm missing mule, which I'd assumed was part of the
distribution. As I recall, that has to do with multi-language
support, unicode, and all that sort of thing, right? I know it's
been around for a long time, but I've never paid much attention
to it. I'm pretty sure I *do* have it in my 21.4.22 installation,
which I installed from macports (sudo port install xemacs).
Soooo ...
o What next? Gotta get mule in there, I guess. Where do I get it,
and where in the source hierarchy does it fall? I don't know that
no mule is the only problem.
o Supplementary question: I know it's not necessary for compiling
xemacs, but where exactly do the packages go, i.e., what
directory? (Assuming I give ./configure no options ... if
that's even relevant.)
o The sumo package that I downloaded is dated July 27, 2010. I'm
guessing that since most package developers have abandoned
working on packages, that this date is probably right. Is it?
o Another supplementary question: is it possible to entirely root
hyperbole out of xemacs? I used to use it a lot, finally came
to hate it, but found it's so thoroughly ingrained, at least in
21.4.22, that my efforts to get rid of it have invariably led
to problems. So it remains as a kind of an albatross.

x-symbol users: x-symbol-8bits cannot be set to t!

I am desperately looking for another x-symbol user, who could confirm
the following, which I have tested with xemacs -vanilla and then calling
x-symbol-initialize
There is *no* way to have the variable x-symbol-8bits enabled by default.
Every time I open a latex file, this variable is nil.
The variable can be set:
- I have tried to set it via customize to t.
- By using setq in the init file.
- By putting it into the LaTeX-mode-hook
- buy using Local variables like this

Is ability to set local variables for files broken in the beta?
I don't use it a lot, but I use it sometimes. I just did it on a
text file that I use frequently and got a backtrace. So I
tried it again on a LaTeX file I rarely visit, and got another
one.
Here's what I have at the end of the LaTeX file:

This is unchanged for years, and is standard boilerplate I put at the
end of most every LaTeX file. Here's what I get in another buffer when
I visit it.
The message is similar when I visit an ordinary text file with local variables
set, i.e., the complaint is about a missing prefix:

Okay, I'm game. Not today or maybe even the rest of this week,
but this list has been so helpful in getting me over to the beta the
least I can do is do a little more testing. (Like the good old days.)

Speaking of which, I tried to compile on my Ubuntu machine, and
it flat out didn't compile. I've been ignoring it. I need to rerun the
exercise and take notes on what actually happened. I'll get around
to that another time. I have worse problems on my Ubuntu machine
than just XEmacs. It's marginally functional.
But first, if someone could tell me what sorts of things I can do to test
for what's wrong on my iMac, I should have some cycles free to dig
in sometime early next week.

Like most fairly advanced users, I'm barely conscious that the menus and toolbar
are even there. Once in a while I'll explore them. The only thing I've ever used
them for is to go to the Options menu, particularly to set faces and the like.
And when I do, some sort of sausage is ground out the other end.
So my question, a general one with a specific case in mind is: Is there a way
to find out, even if it means prowling around in source somewhere, what
elisp is executed when a user selects a given menu choice?
This last couple of weeks I've spent combing over my XEmacs configuration
from top to bottom has been extremely productive for me, buit there is just
one more thing that I can't figure out. Everything looks right when I come
up except the font is too small in pretty much all buffers. I've found that
if I go to Options => Font Size and select 14, everything is fine from then
on. It seems logical to suppose if I knew what elisp magic happens when
I do that, I can put that at the end of my init files and not have to do it
with the menus.
And in case anyone is wondering, yes I have the default face set with
the size. In fact, in every face I've customized, I have the size set, but
it doesn't make any difference until I do it from that menu option.
