Xemacs bug??
17 years, 2 months
Randi Groen
Fatal error (11).
Your files have been auto-saved.
Use `M-x recover-session' to recover them.
Your version of XEmacs was distributed with a PROBLEMS file that may
describe
your crash, and with luck a workaround. Please check it first, but do
report
the crash anyway.
Please report this bug by invoking M-x report-emacs-bug, or by selecting
`Send Bug Report' from the Help menu. If that won't work, send ordinary
email to `xemacs-beta(a)xemacs.org'. *MAKE SURE* to include this entire
output from this crash, especially including the Lisp backtrace, as well as
the XEmacs configuration from M-x describe-installation (or equivalently,
the file `Installation' in the top of the build tree).
*Please* try *hard* to obtain a C stack backtrace; without it, we are
unlikely
to be able to analyze the problem. Locate the core file produced as a
result
of this crash (often called `core' or `core.<process-id>', and located in
the directory in which you started XEmacs or your home directory), and type
gdb /usr/bin/xemacs core
then type `where' at the debugger prompt. No GDB on your system? You may
have DBX, or XDB, or SDB. (Ask your system administrator if you need help.)
If no core file was produced, enable them (often with `ulimit -c unlimited')
in case of future recurrance of the crash.
Lisp backtrace follows:

I see the same problem when building the packages with a recent CVS
snapshot of XEmacs.
The above patch avoids the problem 'Cannot open load file: "ccl"'
in pccl-20.el but then the build fails with a segmentation fault
later:
xemacs -no-autoloads -vanilla -batch -eval '(setq stack-trace-on-error t load-always-display-messages t load-ignore-out-of-date-elc-files t load-show-full-path-in-messages t)' -eval '(setq load-path (list (expand-file-name "mule" lisp-directory) lisp-directory))' -l /usr/src/packages/BUILD/xemacs-packages/packages/package-compile.el -- ispell fsf-compat xemacs-base -- -f batch-byte-compile tpum.el

Well, LANG does determine what encoding subprocesses believe that data
passed to them from XEmacs is in, so there is a decent argument for XEmacs
to set it if it knows it’s going to be passing data in that encoding.

Right. This has changed since you wrote your site-start.el; the current
situation is that when you start XEmacs in a ja_JP.UTF-8 locale like so:
env -i LANG=ja_JP.UTF-8 TERM=xterm ./xemacs -vanilla
the language environment information is initialised to:
current-language-environment
=> "Japanese (UTF-8)"
(assq 'native-coding-system (assoc current-language-environment language-info-alist))
=> (native-coding-system . utf-8)
(getenv "LANG")
=> "ja_JP.UTF-8"

My local archive goes back to November 2004, so I don’t have it either. It
may well be that the work I did was in reaction to it, though.

Malcolm, if you can add EMACSDEBUGPATHS=t to the package build environment,
I’m sure that will help in figuring out what’s going wrong. I don’t have a
buildable package tree locally, or I’d do it myself :-/ .

Does it make sense to add support for calling this function to the language
environment code?
> People in Taiwan (at least Buddhist scholars :-) do use both character
> sets, and if there happens to be separate -Big5 and -CNS environments

> Taiwan)
If the user is under Unix the language environment is normally determined
from the environment (and rightfully so), where the most-used coding system
is as granular as it gets. For zh_TW.Big5, the effective Unicode precedence
list should place Big5 before the CNS character sets; for zh_TW.EUC-TW, it
should place the CNS character sets before Big5, since they are what EUC-TW
encodes; and for zh_TW.UTF-8 it should place Big5 before CNS, since Big5 is
far more popular than CNS. There are no other POSIX locales specific to
Taiwan.
That is, under Unix there is no way to automatically work out that two
Chinese-as-used-on-Taiwan language environments should only differ in the
preferred Unicode precedence list of the user, so if we are to offer such
differing (XEmacs) language environments, the user needs to call Lisp to do
this. And (set-language-environment "Chinese-UTF-8-prefer-CNS”) (or some
other less unwieldy name) is not hugely less awkward than
set-language-unicode-precedence-list.
If the user is under Win32, it seems even less likely that it can be
automatically determined that a given user prefers CNS over Big5, since the
only Traditional Chinese language environments available are based on Big5.
> switching between them is equivalent to users calling s-l-u-p-l directly.
Which is fine, since it cannot be done automatically.

Maybe, but that’s not what you wrote. Your comment was above
set-language-unicode-precedence-list, and said that *that* interface was
wrong, whereas as you describe it there, *that* interface is the right one,
and *set-unicode-precedence-list* is mostly useless, which is a position I
agree with wholeheartedly.

Add a
(eval-when-compile
(debug-print
"lisp-directory is %s, exec-directory is %s, mule-lisp-directory is %s"
lisp-directory exec-directory mule-lisp-directory))
to one of the files in question, and try again. mule-lisp-directory should
correspond to a directory with ccl.el in it; I suspect the package compile
environment either picks up an older installed xemacs-21.5 binary when you
wanted to use one that is running in-place, or it confuses the
path-searching code of the desired binary sufficiently that it thinks
mule-lisp-directory is under the installation prefix.

I hit the same problem with the latest CVS 21.5 and the latest set of
release and pre-release packages. going back to the previous beta
version resolved the problem, no other changes.

None of the language environments in XEmacs CVS currently use
set-language-unicode-precedence-list; if they had done, Stephen is correct
that such a call in startup.el would override them.
Code in site-start.el is called after that, though, as you worked out.
> I think it would be nicer if set-language-unicode-precedence-list could

Huh. Well, an issue with this is that some of the X11 keysyms are defined to
map explicitly to non-Unicode character sets, and some are defined to map to
Unicode. Would it be appropriate for Zcaron to map to ISO 8859-15 in Western
Europe, despite that the standards say it should be assigned to ISO 8859-2?
The answer though is that people don’t care, as long as their files are
written to disk correctly.
> [...] Then, a user could use this function in ~/.xemacs/init.el to
> enforce his own preferences. Right now this works only partly because
> some changes can not be done after the initialisation of the window
> system anymore.
Well, that’s not quite true, though yes, it does also require also a good
bit of XEmacs knowledge to be able to say that. This code tells every
non-ASCII character to generate the XEmacs character it would map to when
converted to Unicode, and then converted back using the latest values for
language-unicode-precedence-list:
(loop
for keysym in (hash-table-key-list (x-keysym-hash-table))
with current-binding = nil
do (when (and
(symbolp keysym)
(setq current-binding (get-character-of-keysym keysym)))
(set-character-of-keysym keysym
(decode-char 'ucs
(encode-char current-binding
'ucs)))))
But for most people that code should not be necessary if the locale was
correctly determined at startup (before the window-system code) and if each
language environment set the language-unicode-precedence-mapping. Is the
language environment incorrectly set by default for you without your
site-start.el? I’ve added code that handles that much better in the last
year, so examining LANG may no longer be necessary.
Stephen’s comment in Unicode.c (below) is incorrect when it comes to
Cyrillic in that we’ve only ever supported cyrillic-iso8859-5 as an internal
character set for most of Cyrillic, mapping to it on decoding and from it on
encoding, so koi8-r and windows-1251 would never have been in the list; it’s
also incorrect in that Chinese-Big5 and Chinese-CNS have been separate
language environments in Mule whenever Chinese-CNS was supported in the
context of language environments, which it mostly hasn’t been. So to me it
does make sense to add support for calling this function to the language
environment code.
/* #### This interface is wrong. Cyrillic users and Chinese users are going
to have varying opinions about whether ISO Cyrillic, KOI8-R, or Windows
1251 should take precedence, and whether Big Five or CNS should take
precedence, respectively. This means that users are sometimes going to
want to set Vlanguage_unicode_precedence_list.
Furthermore, this should be language-local (buffer-local would be a
reasonable approximation).

[Bug: 21.4.19] Xemacs Unstable on 64-bit Systems
17 years, 2 months
Kenneth Loafman
================================================================
Dear Bug Team!
Let's try this again. Just crashed trying to do a bug report.
I am having a horrible time trying to find a stable version of Xemacs
for a 64-bit Ubuntu Edgy system. I've tried all of the executables
that are available for Edgy and no luck. I get a segfault when first
starting Xemacs. Using "--vanilla" works more often, but that leaves
me with no customizations. Sometimes Xemacs is quite stable, staying
up for days, then crashing when I try to do SVN or CVS, or sometimes
just crashing while editing. Very disconcerting.
...Thanks,
...Ken
